Nikon 200-500

This touring bizniz has opened a whole new world for me - and so has the 200-500.
What's your take on it for birds?

Elsa, I love the last one a lot. The colors and the background are super!
The first and third have a bit of a fuzzy background. I don't know whether it's VR or additional sharpening in PP?

Thanks BOB :)
Jakov my love - I have no idea why the background in #1 is like that - I dont ever use VR. I dont like it at all :(
oh and I mostly don't sharpen anything -if I do - it is selective and not on the whole image
The last one is a sunbird - Lesser double collared Sunbird. veeeery small and veeeeery fast

And here we have the Orange breasted sunbird -

Lovely birds, particularly the last.  The lens seems to be a winner.  Isn't it fun capturing birds with a long lens!

Can you tell us something about the AF? Speed? Precision? Hit Rate?

My fave is the bird in #3. Love the nearly monochrome BG.

Thanks guys

Anthony - I couldnt really do much birds before - so of course this lens is wonderful for me.
It is still a learning curve for me - I listened to Bob as much as I could :)
Shutterspeed  preferably 1/2000 if light allows
F5.6 doesnt leave me much scope - and if the light is not too great, I have to push ISO which I personally dont like much on the smaller birds.
Both my D800's are underexposing - never bothered me in studio - but this actually is huge when you need light
Malachite sunbird - the green one (not shot with the 200-500)

I am sure my set up is not perfect - these birds are small and you really usually need a 600 +TC at least I would think. I have been lucky that I got close.

Why did I open this thread? It makes me lust for that lens again, even though I know I would probably not be using it that much, it would be really nice to have the option, considering all the birds at the local sea. It seems the lens is capable of producing some quite nice shots!
