Long lens so you won't scare the critter off and indefinite patience. No rain. See, it's easy ....

Or just snap its portrait when the opportunity arises ( observing the points laid out in the previous post).

Elsa, Bjorn, Michael,  great shots. I have been (recently) following Bjorn's advice and here are some results.

You're a quick learner, Elsa.

However the butterflies follow an apparent Brownian-type pattern of movement, ie. very erratic, so little is gained by trying to track an individual. Rather, pick a specific flower, and apply that everlasting patience principle. sooner or later your flower will be visited. Or with 99.9% probability, all other flowers than your pre-selected one will appeal to the flittering creature. Thus, wait even longer.

Yes, I've always noticed this.

Rather, pick a specific flower, and apply that everlasting patience principle. sooner or later your flower will be visited.

The key of success.

Then just adjust the focus and press the shutter... 8)

Great one with nice lighting giving structure details.

This creature is slowly disapeairing from our countryside (in France). First culprit : regroupings of land which destroyed miles of hedges.]
