Physical AF adjustment

I have a D5300 on the way and in that regard I've contemplated adjusting the AF module to allow decent AF accuracy. I know each lens - different IR response, etc. but I want to get in the ballpark.  To learn more about the procedure I chose to use an old D40 (unmodded) and my oldie D20IR as guiniea pigs. Off came the bottom plate, a few twisting movements with an allen key and Bob's a very much better uncle.
Here's a quick test shot with D200IR and 85/1.8G at full throttle. The D40 has finally become useable with faster lenses.

Sten, as Erik has noted, a convincingly sharp test shot.

What process did you adopt to nail the correct focus adjustment once the base plates were removed?  Is it a trial and error approach involving adjustments and test shots and repeating until a satisfactory outcome is converged upon, or is it more straight forward than this?

Maybe Sten has an image to show the hex screws that needs adjustment. I suppose those are responsible for the very(?) slight movements that adjust the position of the AF sensor in the bottom of the camera.

I'll open the D40 again 2morro 2 show what I did.
