Yahoo is For Sale

It has been widely reported in the business news that Yahoo is for sale.  For those of us here it is relevant as Yahoo owns flickr, one of the most popular internet photo sharing sites.  After the present CEO if Yahoo of Marissa Mayer took control there were policy changes at flickr, mainly a reduction in the number of accounts being deleted and an increase in the cost of pro accounts.  Activist shareholders have been pushing for change after Ms Mayer's failure to increase earnings and monetize Yahoo's substantial holding of Alibaba shares.  Several non core businesses have been shut down.  The future of flickr depends on whether it is profitable or not.

If Flickr does shut down its a nice opportunity to make a fresh start, many of my old images are neither relevant or too low in resolution for todays high res screens.

So, what would be the next best thing?

Couple of basic requirements:
- No compression applied to uploaded file
- No compression on down sized images (Flickr does this)
- No stripping of the Colour Profile (used to be problem in the past on certain hosting sites)
- Full control whom can see and download the images

And a new feature I would like is to control which sites can hotlink to the images so access can be blocked from the forums that I left

I don't think flickr will go away, but it will change in ways I can't predict.  Business "experts" predict Yahoo is a good property for a large media company, ISP or even Microsoft to own.

Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo ages ago but was blocked. Is Marco Borries (origin of Star Office, now Open Office & Derivates) still at Yahoo? He is sure a great asset for every company.

I am not so active on flickr anymore although I am Pro since ~2005.

I am more interested in people, exchange, learning than in dumping shots to any site...

Exactly, I was on Flickr because many of my photo friends were on Flickr many moons ago.

Now I post images on NG, FB, etc with a much bigger coverage so there's no need to use Flickr anymore other than hotlinking my images on NG and other forums.

What I am finding is on flickr I get a ton of traffic from folks looking at my photos.  I have only had a pro account for about 2 weeks and see it's averaging around 9,000 views per day.  This is about 10 times what I get on Wordpress.  A lot of views doesn't prove anything other than people are looking, but if I had $1 for each one...

I am not playing a numbers game.  There isn't much that I do to generate views on flickr.  They just come, I don't know from where.

I suspect the amount of groups they are in and the tags help too.

of course its not surprising Charlie. Ron's images have commercial qualities.
What kind of groups would you be referring to? My nude photos don't get nearly as many views. Maybe because they are selfies?
Ron - if you are good in the tags department - I can use some help please.

I am pretty basic on tags.  Landscapes do nearly as good as girls.  I use groups a lot, but they don't take much effort.  Since getting stats I have reduced the number of groups I am using.  The big scam on flickr is adding huge (tens of thousands) of follows in the hope they will reciprocate.  I follow about 250 other accounts and have about 940 following me.  Perhaps my images have commercial qualities, perhaps they have comical qualities.  Elsa, now I know your secret, nude selfies.  Hugs to you, time for me to try that.
