Orchid detail
« on: March 21, 2016, 00:01:43 »
I have this orchid which now has 22 flowers which is a first for me.
Working on my stacking skills. This is a 45 image stack at about 1:1.4 magnification. Shot with D700 and 105/2.8 AF-D, stacked with Zerene, Pmax.

Very clean job even if some shots are missing to make top left and bottom right corners sharp and thus, all the lines which are here, the main subject.

In focus stacking, lighting is, with skills, the main factor : it renders here perfectly.

Simone, it is very sensual.
Your stacking skills are mastered as far as I am concerned :)

Thanks! That was what attracts me the most about these flowers, followed by texture.

Yes indeed, although contrast is boosted a fair bit.
Some day I will attempt the whole flower.

Yes, the corners were intentionally left out of the stacking procedure because of their angles. I would have needed almost double the layers to fully include them. I think it still works for this image although it could have been nice to have everything sharp.

Yes lighting is indeed tricky. This was a very simple light setup: I simply bounced a flash off the ceiling. I realized during the pp that this gives a bit too flat lighting, the next time I will try to light it such that the fine details are rendered with more constrast.

thanks!
I'm just a beginner in stacking, the most tricky part is having the patience to run through the stack, you can mess up so many things. The fine focusing increments are also hard on the 105/2.8 AF-D because the focus throw is so short. Then actually seeing what layers you need to take. Then the artifacts which show up (even though they are hard to see in this small jpeg, to present a stacked image at large sizes it has to be quite flawless; besides the glaring artifacts, our eyes pick up stuff that can feel wrong even though it's hard to put a finger on it). Everything still feels clumsy at the moment.

Beautiful image! Striking warm tones ;)
Thanks Erik!
