Where to go?
« on: March 09, 2016, 10:23:38 »
Between a busy working schedule and obligations at home I've managed to secure an extended weekend (four days) in May dedicated to photography. My initial reaction would be to go for a hike in the mountains, but that normally requires at least a week including traveling. So this time I've decided to visit a city to concentrate on people. I just have a hard time deciding where to go. I'm considering Paris, Lisbon, Prague, and some others.

So, does anyone have any other suggestions for an interesting place in Europe (to keep the travel time down)?

PS. Sorry if this thread is in the wrong section of the forum, but I don't know where else to put it.

Of course I'm biased, but Lisbon in May cannot be missed...

It's OK in this Board.

I would suggest Prague. A very nice city with lots to see and enjoy. Do a crawl around the local micro-breweries but be aware of the incredible strong ale they supply you with. After a day your head will be spinning (own experience). English is widely spoken and people are in general very friendly.

The Prague Castle, the Old Town, the museums, Kafka's house and adjacent bar, the bridges over the Vlata River (Karlos Most being the most popular),  ride the sturdy and no-nonsense trams, ..., the list goes on.

Prague is super indeed  (including that cerny pivo in  U Fleků. ;)  )

But keep also Vienna in mind. It's a very versatile city with lots of people and different sceneries.

You can hardly go wrong with any of them, and there are many others besides.

Of the three on your list, the one I would return to in May is Lisbon.

Prague is also delightful, but I recommend avoiding the first and last Mondays in May, because those are English public holidays, and from Friday night until Monday evening Prague will be full of my fellow countrymen of a type I would rather you did not meet.  This is likely to be less of a problem in Lisbon.

You cannot go wrong with Lisbon :)

I go to Scotland with this very forum in early May, but if I had another choice of where to go in early May I would certainly choose the Mediterranian like in Calgary, Sardegna.

The town is smaller than the other options but it is rather old, going back to the Phoeniciens. I have been there twice and I will sure go back there: The churches, the botanical gardens, the University, the steep small streets, the food (esp. the world unique sweets). And if you rent a car and drive within an hour around you find the wildest blooming exotic places, edible cactus fruit, herbs of any kind, cliff coast with bathable bays by their feet, the bluest ans turquoisest of waters, abanodened mines, Morisco leftovers ... for beverage try the unique "Mirto" and do not miss some of the greates seafish restaurants in the world...

I have not yet been to Lisbon and like pretty much what I have seen in movies and photos, so...

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I've been to both Prague and Lisbon, but that was before my interest in photography. I do remember Lisbon as a colourful city. And the only place I have been offered illegal substances on the street.  :D

Vienna also seem interesting and that is a place I've never visited.

I cannot recommend France, people tend to be camera-shy here (or rather, tog-phobic). Also, we got some stupid laws.
Greece might be especially interesting, given their situation, but you must accept to take some risk. Also, police has no good reputation there - deservedly.

Greece is great if you are on to take some risks ...

Airy and Frank those comments about Greece are not nice.
Please refrain from any sort of bigotry and slander.
Thanks.

Greece is a beautiful country with warmhearted people.
Unlike you, I have lived there for 3 years and those years I consider one of the happiest of my life.

The Grandma of my Grandma was a Greek pincess name Mavrocordatos .

Jakov: I got a lot of Greek blood in me, more than my three brothers and a sister.
Currently Greece suffers a lot of being at the southern border of Europe.

Why do you write such nonsense? You know the rules here. It is not about any kind of censorship as you intimate. We have a site for photography. If you wish to debate politics, go to a relevant site for that.
