Color phenomenon, presumably caused by the clouds:
First, as the D800 exposed it, then brightened up for viewing.

Keith, the beautiful iridescent clouds are well captured.  The "dodging" utilizing these peculiar trees (or cacti?) works great!

Not just the clouds, I love the whole image.

Thank you Akira. The rainbow colors weren't visible to the eye, due to extreme brightness and glare.  I could see a hint of them on the camera LCD display.
This part of the Mojave Desert has a lovely sparse distribution of surface features and flora.

Today, the fireworks started early and lasted all day :) Unfortunately, I was only able to take a few snapshots because we had to locate and rescue a dog from a cliff before the real fireworks started. Happy new year to all of you here on NG!

Yes, it is iridescent clouds. They were visible yesterday for a short while, but today they lasted the whole day. When it was an opening in the cloud cover of course :)
