Meet the Fierce Beer of the North
« on: February 16, 2016, 19:52:02 »
A different kind of fierce bear though ;)

The name Beer is actually Dutch for Bear, very applicable for a Kangal because back in their home country they protect the livestock against bears and wolves in the Turkish mountains in temperatures ranging from -40 to +40 degrees Celcius.

Unknown breed to me, but feel free to post further pictures so we get an impression of the Kangal :)

Around me he's very docile and relaxed but he's still a bit wary to visitors, its a guard dog by nature so this is in his genes. The Kangals are very intelligent dogs and can quickly separate the good visitors from the bad visitors so I expect him to be a bit more relaxed when time passes (he's here less than 2 weeks).

In the coming months I'll dog proof all the fences around the property so he has more room to play, the idea is to make the fence setup flexible so
he can be where the visitors are not.
Cheers,
Jan Anne

Lovely,
but definitely a dog that needs special care ;-)

A few years back they started to import Kangals into Namibia to protect the herds from leopards.
In contrast to other guard docs, they go against the perpetrators. Which confuses the leopards and they leave. Actually, anyone trying to approach the heard that is not the owner will have problems...

cheers

Absolutely, not the kind of dog for people looking for a play mate, long walks on the beach, going camping, etc or at least not without the proper training from day one. He's top dog and willing to show it and doesn't stop doing so until the other surrenders or leaves, great characteristics for a guard dog but not so cool when going for a stroll in a place where other dogs are around.

I don't know the history of Beer as he was found and lived for 3 months in an animal shelter were I picked him up. We are still getting to know each other, what is clear though is that he isn't used to walking around on a leash but that's just one of the things we have in common ;)

Luckily I have the luxury of 5000m2 of land where he can do whatever he needs to do without me paying attention all the time. And in the evening he joins me at the fireplace where he can take a break from his security duties.

Cheers,
Jan Anne

You just have to throw him the odd steak once in a while and bonding will be strong ...

For those who don't know:
Male Kangals have a height at the withers of between 65 to 80 cm and a weight of between 50 to 65 kg.

Playing with them is an advanced from of exercise :)

Will you train him?

I am looking for the fierce beer of the South.  (Beer as in free.)  I don't have a dog, but I love them.  My neighbor's dogs are always welcome in my home.

Good looking pup. I appreciate his focus.  I like smart dogs that communicate well and that you can somewhat reason with.  Good Luck to both you and Beer, looks like the start of strong relationship.

Very little, it's not in a Kangals nature to listen and he's no trick dog, would be nice though if he would listen when called and stuff like that.

Like some of the NG members he is a bit wary about mirrorless cameras though, will probably wear off over time ;)
