Nikon TC-16a conversion

I have an old TC-16a that i used on my F4 (when I had it!).  In order to get it to work on my Df, i need to modify the pins (move pin 3 to pin position 6).  I'm wondering if its worth the effort?  I would use it with my 400mm Nikkor P.C f/5.6.  My other thought is to get a used TC-14E II and remove the tab (much easier to do!)

Yes, it worth it, even more so you already have one.

I bought one already modified, as the difference between an original one is not significant. I have used it on my former D700 and now on my Df. I have pictures but I have to look for in my archives.

However, you will need good light when shooting moving subjects with slow lenses like your 400mm.

It works very well with my old 300mm F/4 ED (if the focus is already set up on the right range of DOF, as you have certainly noticed).

As for the TC, I made this very basic surgery with mine (old version TC-14 AFI). Very easy, but make sure you don't remove these two very thin metal rings just behind the mount as it is very tricky to put them back.

JIS crewdrivers advised.

JIS screwdrivers mandatory !! Without them, the risk of stripping the screw heads is very high.

Mongo has a couple of modified 16As and has performed the surgery himself on one of them. It is not difficult but can be a little tricky. Patience and the relatively simple tools need are advised. There is a very good thread on the net that sets it out step by step with commentary and pictures.

It is important you note that the AF range will be very limited using the modified converter. You will effectively have to manually bring the lens close to being within focus. You then have to engage the AF by pressing half way on the shutter button.  If you have brought the lens with a certain small range of focus, then, the modified 16a will complete the focus for you. Both the 16a and modified 16a still have this limitation on AF. So, for faster moving objects it has severe limitations on its use. For stationary and near stationary subjects, it can work a treat and with quite good IQ.

Also, I am aware of the TC-16A operating characteristics as i used it on my F4 with my old 300mm f/4.5 AI-s lens that i have; but thanks for reminding me
