I didn't have to endure such "dangers", but i don't have trains. I've got boats though ...

At Lago Maggiore in Italy, small boat near a "beach" hut. Early morning, otherwise the place was crowded.

Are there a lot of problems with train departures in Germany these days? I’ve heard so. We had some delay on our trains from Hamburg to Freiburg on our interrail trip this summer.

delay and cancelling are standard today.
Just as one example: on the route you took direction Basel, every tenth IC train is no more allowed to enter Switzerland because of delay.
