Le penseur
« on: November 09, 2015, 22:54:38 »
I first thought it was a lady handling a cell phone. At processing time, I saw a very different scene. Shot across a pretty wide river (FR Meuse, NL Maas) in Verdun, France, with the Df + 105/2.5, processed with RawTherapee.

Airy this is really lovely. In my opinion the old man needs to be lightened up someone to place more focus on him. For me its all about him.

I really like this photo. Old man, in an old building, paints have fallen off, rusty rainwater pipe, dried moss on the base of the building, lack of light on the man's face, old fashioned window -- all together creates a sense of "something is going on there". Like you were investigating and someone's watching you.

Nice capture. Reminds me of the books of George Simenon ;)

Thanks Elsa, John and Anirban. The shot would have been a case for the D800. Since it is highly cropped, there is not Michael detail to be found on the man's face, so better leave it in the dark. His wristwatch is quite conspicuous and becomes the main subject (and the title could become "ultima necat"). The buildings on that bank are quite old and especially survived the 1st WW, which destroyed half of the city.
I've read several books by Simenon, most of them at a hospital (maybe the only proper literature available there). Loners were among his favorite subjects indeed, but I tend to associate him with Paris. If that had been shot at Île saint Louis, maybe...

A number of his books and some 'Maigrets' have the Meuse region as background. But I agree he is more well known of his impressionism of the 'Colour Locale de Paris'.

Nice picture. Here is a somewhat similar scene, but with a younger girl. From Nyons in France.

I picked the wrong Maigrets then. As I said, I tend to associate Simenon with Paris, but that's a personal (not factual) association stemming from my reading a handful of books, i.e. a smaller sample. Also, equating Simenon with Maigret (as I tend) is probably wrong.

Nice one Nikea, with one major difference - to get such warm colors in Verdun, you need a sunset (as was the case). In either case, the expression does not come from the face, but from a limb.

I rather felt something mysterious in the initial image.  It's funny that the tone of the discussion has gone rather to the fun side.

thing in windows tells many many stories - and I assume we can interpret them in even more ways.
