Three views of a pond

The pond is in the 12th century garden of the Motsuji Temple in Hiraizumi, Japan. We drove there last week from Sendai, arriving late afternoon. The autumn colours were at their peak, and were spectacular.

Fons, Jakov and Frank - thank for your comments.

@ Frank - yes, it look like a small lake, but it I believe that it was made as an integral part of the garden 800 years ago, complete with carefully placed rocks that are symbolic. It is called a pond in Japanese. Its name is oizumi ga ike, and the adjoining Motsu-ji temple and its grounds are listed as a World Heritage site.

Mike, the symmetry is very effective in #1 and 2.  The water surface was very calm.  Lucky you!  I would have liked some trees with red/yellow leaves in #2, but the exaggerated perspective of a superwide lens works nicely.

All the photos show tranquility. Just by looking at them, I feel relaxed. I could so use a break from work right now and sit by a pond like this. Great shots Mike.

Thanks, Akira. we were lucky - there was no wind, and we arrived just in time for the late afternoon sunshine. There were a few brightly coloured trees at the end of the lake, but unfortunately they were in shade.

Thanks, Anirban. It really was tranquil. This was the intent of the original design, and it really works. I could have spent hours there.
