@Jakov, I took the photo when the moon was in between clouds and then used one of the Analog Efex Pro filters to get this effect (the high ISO did the rest). So it did not take much actually :-)

Arend, thank you so much for the explanation.
I am impressed by two facts:
1. How the moon doesn't contain any noise.
2. How you managed to separate the moon from the background. It's as if you stuck the moon on a noisy background

To me, the noise is caused by the severely underexposed night sky. The technical aspect aside, I agree with all. Thanks for this inspiring moon shot, Arend!

And you are right Akira the underexposure of the sky - the moon was slightly overexposed - combined with the postprocessing I did (besides the Nik filter forgot to say that I also seriously pulled the clarity and vibrance sliders) at ISO 6400 caused this noise. What catches me as well is the relatively even noise pattern of the D500.
