I guess the trick was the combination of the wide dynamic range of Sigma fp even at ISO1600, the use of the cloud as the ad-hoc ND filter and sheer luck!  :D  The "color mode (corresponding to picture control of Nikon) off" setting (which in effect works similarly to the log profile) also help retain the highlight.

If you mean me by Mr. Cloud (lol), the clouds offers an infinite amount of variations to shoot the moon, especially the full one.
