Interesting. If you combined the espresso with the soup ... you'll probably end up with a stronger soup.  I need to drink more espresso.

I recommend a Doppio Ristretto Monsooned Malabar (I use 16g for a regular espresso cup).

I am using an old commercial machine, a La Cimbali M30 Bistro that I grabbed on e-bay for a lot less money than one of those home toys would have cost me: http://www.afximages.com/articles.php?article=WMF-Espresso

Needs a few spare parts now and then, but gives me a lot of pleasure ;-)

That seems like a lot of work, but I'm sure it delivers a great cup of coffee. I have a little home toy espresso now, (DeLonghi), but I'm thinking of a Salvatore (a bigger home toy machine).

Well, they do have PID controlled dual boiler systems which is the holy grail (I personally don't like exposed E61 heads, I find them a safety hazard and they are ugly in my eyes).
If I ever get rid of the La Cimbali, I'll probably get a dual boiler La Spaziale S2 converted for direct water connection.
I'd love to have a La Marzocco, but they are energy hogs. A big advantage of the smaller dual boiler systems is the standby for the steam.
