all with this relatively "soft" look (not : lacking sharpness, but with moderate contrast) common to the CV 40/2 and CV 58/1.4 at short range. It is not just about the backgrounds.

Not sure it's soft.  Hard to explain.      In this topic  ( http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=1098.0 ) also some flowers with the CV90.

Hard to explain indeed. Strangely, my "old and inferior "50/1.4 SC manages to bring some "pop" into such pictures, Thanks to all sorts of aberrations the CVs don't have.

Thanks first shot is with the closefocus diopter attached the 2nd without, my apo-voigtlander 90 is the 2nd incarnation so it fully meters while its chipped bought new from hongkong

I am lucky to have the same version. ;)     Did you notice increased sharpness with the Close Focus lens attached?  I have tested it now a few times, but apart from bringing the image closer, it doesn't give an extra enhancement (on details, colours, contrast and sharpness).

One thing i did notice with the diopter attached exposure is more sensitive.
On the edit i have better results with Photoninja than with Photoshop cc, the latter being ever so aggressive.
