The foreground clarity is exemplary and a fine testimony to what quality the Otus lens can deliver. However, I'm a little surprised that the background isn't as silky smooth ads I had expected. Dry grass etc. can really impact even well out-of-focus backgrounds in an adverse manner.

Well, with bokeh, it is always a gamble. However, it could be an effect of the stacking software, which sometimes causes less-then-smooth background surfaces. It is good to have technical feedback, but concept feedback is also nice to receive. As for me, I am a concept photographer. Yes, I work on the technique, but the content and context is always more important to me, trying to capture the feeling of what I see. It goes without saying (or we can say it again) that what we capture outside is always a projection of what we see from inside. Around here we have whole fields of sunflowers all pointing their faces at the Sun. I have yet to learn to be a landscape photographer. Perhaps I am waiting for the 24mm Zeiss Otus which is rumored to be announced soon.

P.S. I tried to send you a personal message, but was not allowed to. How do we reach you?

Perhaps NG site settings were wrong at one point in time. We tweak them once in a while. At present I get PMs each day from normal members so there is no obvious reason why you shouldn't be able to send too. Try again.

As to the background, the lesson I quickly learned when I started with SLRs many moons ago was using the preview (stop-down) button at the time. Stopped down the scenery might look very different from what is projected at max.aperture to the finder. Even the tiniest dead straw or litter can create havoc when you are working in the the near range. So once spotted as an issue, I try to weed it out then check again to see if the background now is smooth enough.

Perhaps you need to clear your browser cache? Older settings might have persisted there. I just tried what you attempted: logged in as an ordinary member, sent a PM to my admin account, all went OK.

I believe you shouldn't click on the name. I think the system wants to link you to the member's profile, which you aren't allowed if it's not you (of course). Just type the name and your message and all should be well.
