Hi Fons, I've been seeing somewhat aggressive wasps lately. The photo is from my garden, with a Russian aluminum lens, the Jupiter 11.

Yes large oriental wasps have entered our airspace ;)

Structures used for controlling the log driving. Called variously log piers, boom piers, stone cribs, and probably more designations. Norwegian name is 'lensekar'. They measure around 15 by 15m and enclose many tons of rocks.

This river, the largest in the country, was extensively used for timber rafting and log driving until the late '70s. At the peak periods one could literally walk across the river. However the danger of being crushed by logs was significant and the drivers ('river pigs') had an elevated mortality rate.

Here is a closer look at these structures.
very educational. Do they not drive logs anymore?

No. Rail and truck shipments have replaced the old-fashioned, and dangerous, log driving all over the Nordic region. However, the controlling and sorting facilites on the river and adjacent lakes are kept as a historical memorial.

One could say the "new" system is non-sustainable compared to the old. But that applies to most components of our society these days.
