I do believe that one often shoots and posts images that mirror's ones mood or emotions.
Quite often people will see a dark side of emotion where that is not intended - and vice versa.
Make of these what you want.

I really like the first image, but I don't necessarily feel like looking at dark side.  I would rather feel some playfulness.

Great portraits. The first lady looks a bit like Meryl Streep, does it?

Very interesting pictures. I find the second one especially beautiful and touching.
Elsa, I wonder what was your motivation for posting these two pictures together?

Both are very very interesting. I go with more of a square crop on both.

I love both portraits although the "view from above" always feels uncomfortable for me as onlooker

Akira you crack me up :)

Smusesuse - I actually don't know. I don't understand it myself.

Gary - I have 2 eyes. I see landscape - how on earth do you get used to square crops :) :)

Frank - That photo was taken specifically to create a specific emotion. so it worked :)

Open your mind ... accept the Great Spirit into your heart and then open your pocketbook and buy a Hasselblad. (You'll start to see square real quick.)

although I enjoy squares very much (and often end up with square portraits), I tend to agree with Elsa here...
Especially for the first one, where le long coat adds a lot to the somewhat unsetteling feeling I have.
The second one would be interesting in a square format but would probably more room on both sides to be OK.
