My D4 doesnt auto-focus with my non AF-S lens
« on: September 09, 2025, 14:56:22 »
Hey experts,

I wonder if anyone knows what is happening here.

I recently bought a used D4 from an individual seller (so no return option), although it works fine with my AF-S lenses, but it doesnt auto-focus with all my 5 Nikon non AF-S lenses (some non-D and some D AF lenses).

What happens is that although the D4's AF motor will drive the non AF-S lenses to try to focus, but it will either:

a) fail to find focus and stop trying after max 3 to 4 seconds (fully-focused circle-symbol doesnt show), or
b) focuses incorrectly, ie fully-focused circle-symbol shows, but image is blur, apparent even through the view-finder.

If I were to switch to MF, the focusing guidance arrows work fine, and they help me to achieve a sharp image even with the non AF-S lenses.

Lastly, all the lenses (AF-S and non AF-S) work fine with my D700.

Really strange.

Thanks in advance.

From a Google Search:

"Ensure the lens focus switch is set to "AF" or "A" and that the camera's focus mode is also set to autofocus (AF-S or AF-C).
If the issue persists, clean the camera and lens contacts, check for dirt on the sensors,

and if the problem occurs with only one lens, consider sending it and the camera to Nikon for servicing as it may require recalibration or repair."

Hope that helps!

Thanks Ann, so far no luck on that.
