The low attendance might reflect the general stagnation we encounter everywhere these days. Everyone retreats into their own bubble or echo chamber.

I think that is your assumption and interpretation, the 2500 non participants would know the answer and the reason, would be interesting.

If they don't contribute, how will we ever know?

Now, it seems like a clear rejection

We cannot force anyone to like or dislike or contribute or stay away from our web site.

I don't see the low number of entries as a "rejection" because the content of the photographs was left wide-open to any type of image.

It was much more likely to have been a case of either indecision in choosing an image; shyness in showing ones work or, much more likely, sheer procrastination? People probably did intend to submit an entry but time suddenly ran out on them?

Let's just enjoy the quality and the wide variety of the photographs that were submitted.

We might arrange an annual competition?

In the first beginning of Nikongear with Dallas still on board, 2005 iirc, we had a weekly anonymous competition. The price was to choose the topic for next week.

Later, here in Nikongear 2.0, I set up an editing contest. One posts a RAW file, everyone has one week to interpret it with  their tools

Weekly competition is too frequent. That would likely be just a segment of our 'monthly blog'.

I'll think a bit more of having a monthly, or quarterly, competition. Members must show some interest in making this happening.

I'll happily endorse any of the proposals. I'm incline to the yearly competition. Selecting a single image puts things into perspective.

If members didn't submit photos to the NG10Years event, they should at least cast the necessary votes!! Without disclosing any details, there now is a true dog fight to get into the leading position. Every vote will count.

Otherwise if NG members can't be bothered to cast votes, the idea of new competitions is moot.

I'm sorry, girls and guys, that I don't think your wet dreams are feasible. 90 paying and 50 active participants are supposed to regularly rate insects against flowers?
That's pointless.
Let's revive annual NG meetings. I've already offered and am still committed to organizing something. It was the forum's strength and is still a unique selling point.
Let's vote once a year on the 10 best pictures in the forum and donate these rights, along with a financial donation from the participants, to an organization in the humanities sector. That means anyone who wants to participate donates a certain amount and can be selected. Details are to be discussed. This would also generate traffic on NG.

Not a bad idea, Thomas (annual 10). That can be investigated further.

I'd love to revive the NG meeting tradition. Covid put a halt on the activity and later apparently the urge to meet fellow photographers has waned? what does work is members meeting up when they visit another country, like some of us met say Akira in Tokyo,  Danes in Copenhagen, or the Dutchies in Netherlands. That practice is wonderful and should be applauded. Just contact members in the region beforehand and learn what can be achieved.

Zoom meetings can easily be arranged on a regular basis if the NG community has any interest in meeting up in that manner. We had a short pilot attempt of this.

I visit Paco annually in Spain. Frank F will visit me this summer, and I am always open to other suggestions. A pity I now am banned from visiting the US, though. Likewise there are even a few European countries becoming unsafe for travel.

Don't worry about NG traffic. The number of hits to the web site has increased tremendously and is still rising.

Re the actual voting: nothing is yet decided regarding the fight for the top position. Thus, please look through the entries and cast your vote, if you haven't done so already. Only registered NG members (incl. supporters) can see the poll and thus  vote.

The final votes will only be visible after the voting closes.

Just discover this upon my return: good idea, but too short notice, and too short submission window.

By coincidence, i was in a similar position.
Other calls on my time prevented me visiting NG until almost the closing date.

But some interesting suggestions are coming up now, so on the whole Birna its been useful
