Overnight in Milford Sound, New Zealand
« on: May 08, 2025, 12:37:31 »
Images from a very damp overnight boating trip around scenic Milford Sound, in the southern part of New Zealand. The rock faces are quite spectacular - up to 1,200 metres in height, with many waterfalls on the day...

To me, the first image conveys the dynamism of the scenery really well.  Thank you for sharing!

What a place!

The first one stands out for me too. Lots of magic there

Quite so.

The Milford Sounds are located in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park - in what was a heavily glaciated area.

A truly scenic location :) Like a Norwegian fjord on green steroids.

I visited the region when I was a visiting scientist in Christchurch.

My mother and her family were from Christchurch.  I went to University in Dunedin/Otago.

Have spent a lot of time in Christchurch and have visited Milford Sound on several occasions.
Fortunately there is no residential housing or ski fields at Milford Sound, so it has not become ruined as has Queenstown.

I visited the region when I was a visiting scientist in Christchurch.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. The road in can be a challenge, especially if you are driving one of those large campers (not for me). Access is via a quite narrow one way tunnel down from the surrounding highlands....

Marvellous area indeed! Very nice pictures of it as well  ;D

When i visited there (2004), the weather was "good", as in: hardly any rain. So, no waterfalls other than the few standard ones. Beautiful nonetheless !!

Thanks for commenting Hans. We had constant rain -> lots of waterfalls -> good photo opportunities but a wet camera.

For comparison: the classic Norwegian Geirangerfjord with the Seven Sisters waterfalls. (it was an unusually dry summer thus only 4 of the 7 sisters are seen).
