Femundløpet dog sled race
« on: March 16, 2025, 10:20:13 »
This thread is inspired by Øivind Tøiens brilliant images from the Iditarod race a few days ago.

These images are from the last years long distance dog sled race (650 km), Femundløpet in February 2024. The race starts and ends in the historic part of the small old mining town, Røros (among Norways most beautyful, at least best preserved towns, I think). I did unfortunately not have the chance to see the Femundløpet this year.

It was really good winter conditions, -30 degrees Celsius in the morning, which adds an extra challenge to the photography. You must of course wear gloves, thin enough to operate the camera, put have to put on thicker mittens after a few minutes to keep the fingers warm.

I used a Z8 with Z 24-120 f/4 S and a Z6II with a Z 70-200 f/2.8 for flexibility to follow the action. Ideally, in this situation wish I had two similar cameras, an e additional Z8 or maybe a Z9, but the Z6II managed the action situations pretty well, and as I am not at all professional, it would be overkill :)

The former Iditarod winnersRobert Sørlie (bib nr 2) and Thomas Wærner (bib nr 9) are among the greatest national stars in this sport

A 90 degrees sharp corner is what the mushers fear in the start. Thomas Wærner does it with elegance.

Not everybody does that. Bib nr 4 fell through the corner, the dogs kept running, but she managed to keep the grip with her hands. She was ok, the dogs stopped after a couple of 100 meters and she finished the junior 200 km race.

Bib nr 7 shouts desperate to his dogs, as they tried to turn right one quarter to early

The third image here should maybe have been in the "windows" thread.

It is great to know about the exciting events from different parts of the world.  The  third image from the first batch looks amazing and emotional.  Other images are no inferior.

Thank you for sharing!

I'll echo Arkira's sentiments. I particularly like the first three shots of the dogs in full flight. It's great to get an insight into a sport and environment sooo different from that here.
The "National Dog Surfing Championships" held here last week just doesn't compare!

Yes, this was really nice winter conditions, as it is supposed to be in that area in february :-)
2023/2024 winter season was å lot better than the 2024/2025, for people that like snow and cold and do not have health challenges, at least.

Thanks, Akira! Very interesting to see your and other members images from other parts of the world, also. That's was I like about NG.
