Nice pictures, nice to see winter sports with snow around, have just been in Trondheim for the WSC in XC skiing, in rain and warm temperatures.
Tanks for sharing.

Nice shots! Haven't been to the start since 1982! Somewhere I have a decent shot of Herbie Nayokpuk ...

Thanks for the comment Gil. 1982, that is a long time ago, I had to look up Herbie Nayokpuk: He was a highly respected Inupiaq musher, with a 2nd place finish in 1980, and many top 10 finishes. There is a "Herbie Nayokpuk Memorial Award" given out each year. Are you able to locate that image to show us?

Very nice series of images, Øivind. It must be a great experience to be there.

Photographing dog sled race is very fun. Last year, I saw the start of the Femundløpet race in Røros, Norway with very nice winter conditions and cold, nice weather. My biggest memory cards was quickly filled up :-) Indeed lots of things and action to capture. For me, it was also a conflict between recording video and capture images, as some of the action and the overwhelming noise is fun to have on video :-)

Øivind, that image is buried in among thousands of negatives. I was terrible about filing them way back when -- or even getting them processed (a couple years ago, I found half a dozen rolls of Tri-X that I had shot back when and never processed; got it done and got some fun images of my group of friends back then). I will take a look however. The Shishmaref Cannonball deserves resurrecting!

The three best teams have now arrived in Nome. The winner, Jessie Holmes with bib #15 shown in the last team image used 10d 14h 55m 41s. There was about 3h margin to 2nd place and another 3h to the 3rd place finisher. 10 teams scratched or retracted from the race so far.

Thank you Øivind for the insight into an event that we only rarely glimpse on TV. I love those shots of the dogs in full flight, I bet those looks of determination have faded somewhat by this stage.

Thanks, they look pretty vigilant at arrival, and hungry: https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2025/03/14/life-below-zero-star-holmes-wins-iditarod-53/
The mushers are a different story, often becoming so sleep deprived that they hallucinate while out on the trail.

A great spectacle, exciting pictures, the race is good for the event producers, viewers and visitors, but also for the dogs?
