Photography on the coast

Next week we'll travel to Lanzarote where it's windy, sandy and salty.
I never used protective filters for my lenses as they tend to add flares in backlit situations.
So I also don't own any filters except some ND but not for the lenses I plan to bring.

Would you recommend to protect the front element in these conditions?

The longest possible lens hood for all lenses.

Protection filters used to had noticeable affects on the image quality especially when you shot at distance.  But the current high-quality filters like Nikon Arcrest II or Kenko ZX II have no noticeable affects even shot at distance (at least combined with standard lenses).  The coatings of both filters repel moisture and oil admirably and static electricity very well.

While the lens hoods are good protection means, the protection filters should be worthwhile if you shoot in an environment where the dusts or the splashes may hit the lens directly.

I ordered a protection filter for my Z 24-70/4 that will arrive soon.
It was a bargain so......why not?

Kitesurf photography in the very windy (between 5 - 8 Beaufort.  30 knots) and sandy Fuerteventura (island adjacent to Lanzarote). Protection with lenshood, disposable plastic dustbin bags and daily very careful dusting off and washing off (damp cloth) of the equipment. Sand and salt water, the big ennemies. But no (never) use of glass filters, which is debatable off course.

I like the idea never to touch the front lens element of the lens itself but only the protection filter.
It may degrade the lens performance just a little bit but then it stays there forever.
When I buy a lens 2nd hand online I like if there is a comment that the lens has always had a filter on.
If not the chance that the front element is not 100% pristine is high (cleaning marks, tiny scratches etc.).

I bet the modern super teles already have fixed protection filter in front of the main optical systems.  So, adding yet another protection filter is not a good idea, of course?

Yes Akira. Good to mention. The illustrated 300mm f/2.8 VRII has as first lens a meniscus protective lens which has as one of its purposes to protect the other more expensive lenses.

Many thanks for the very good tips here. I'll clean the equipment on a daily basis and will give it to Nikon upon my return for a thorough clean and inspection.
I'll deliberately bring my older gear so if something happens it's of a lesser issue.

I always use the best possible (and expensive) equipment for taking the technically best pictures in the most challenging environments. Otherwise what’s the purpose ? Keeping your top gear in a glass cabinet in your living place ? ☺️
