Problem with the shutter release on D800
« on: April 03, 2023, 21:18:16 »
Hi, it's been a while since I posted here. A lot of other projects keep me from spending much time on intermet.
But now a problem arose, and the first I thought of, after everything else failed, was asking the technical adept folk here for advise.

Kristina has been using a D800 for some time now. The problem she has with the camera, is tgat the shutter release button is pressed all the way down, and refuses to come back up. It seems like something is blocking it from doing so.

Is the only solution to send it in for repair, or is there something I could still try myself? Compressed air at 4 bar did nothing to dislodge, or move te button, so it doesnot appear as simple as the return spring that broke. It seems to be mechanically jammed in place, but I always thought these buttons were sealed.

Any help and/or insights are greatly appreciated
Buddy

Here is a thread with image of how it's designed.
Compressed air could maybe dislodge debris inside.
Of cause no wd40 or the like  :o

The button assembly is only accessible after considerable disassembly of the camera to remove the top cover and get at the retaining clip to enable cleaning of the button shaft.

It might be possible to free the button by gentle continuous tapping of the button. Otherwise it looks like a trip to the repair shop.

Thank you. With this insight, and after some trying to dislodge the sand/obstruction, we'll have to send the D800 off for repairs

Sometimes you can dislodge a button which can not be pulled in any other way by using a double-sided tape that sticks well.
If this does not allow you enough 'pull', try to glue the little square 1*1 mm bottom of a match with superglue. Dries quickly, then pull back and forth. Might work.
