The 400 really shines on the big mp cameras!
Indeed.  It looks like it is made for big mp camera's.  Despite the fact it is produced in 1976 ;)

I concur. Some old lenses really encounter a new spring with modern cameras like the D850 or Z9. Their lower contrast can easily be rectified in post processing as the fine details have been captured by today's high-resolving sensors.

The main culprit might be axial colour aberration which sometimes can be quite pesky to get rid of or reduce to acceptable levels. Thus it is beneficial that the lens has low levels of such aberrations in the first place. This is where the old ED non-IF designs can shine again.

To add to the previous post, even the much maligned Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75 can deliver excellent results if properly handled. Here it is on the Z30. I had problems with overexposure despite the light levels weren't bright as the shutter speed of the Z30 maxes out at 1/4000sec. Tomorrow I'll pick up a ND16X (=4 stops) filter for the Rodenstock to help overcome such "issues" :) The Z9 is easier as it goes all the way to 1/32000 sec plus can be set to low ISO equivalent of 32.

This is the entire frame (1:1 format) on the Z30 and the depth of field at a distance of approx. 6m is vanishingly thin.

Impressive image - link here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003508624719.html

The watch is named after one of the former Soviet Union's 50 Mega tonne nukes - the Tsar Bomba.

Feedback % from site not so high though.

The 400mm f/5.6 Nikkor ED non-IF enjoyed a reputation as the secret tool of fashion photography back in its heydays.

Thanks for the addition, Birna.   I can understand that.  Colours and rendering are perfect for fashion.

The use of a long lens created a special 'look' much favoured for a time. One might say it was 'fashionable'.

I had this lens as a loaner from the national Nikon dealer in the '70s and it was hard to get as production ws low and the lens much in demand. Plus at that time, as a budding scientist, I couldn't afford it :( Thuds reluctantly I had to let it go. Many years later I acquired a very nice sample of the Ai'd K-type.
