These willows are pruned for what its called "convenience wood". Willows are very tolerant for water.

((Frysk. In geriifbosk is in lyts bosk dêr't eartiids it geriifhout, kaphout, wei helle waard dat yn en om it hûs of de pleats brûkt waard. Geriif betsjut 'te brûken', 'gemak'.)).

Fons, is this treatment of the willows what is called "coppicing"?

January, friday the 13th

bananas

Z7, ais-nikkor 50-135mm f/3.5

Wow! Even a bowl with a clump of bananas looks great. The colors are lovely.

Best,

Dave

Yes i didnt know the word thanks Hugh.
At one time after a devastating flood in the winter of 1953, many dikes needed to be repaired.
For that purpose mats of woven willow shoots are the foundation on which boulders are dumped to rebuild the dikes.
In the pictures its for local use, proper coppicing is done at water level.

Yes. 'Pollarding' is another term in use which I believe is equivalent. The aim is to make the trees produce more fine branches (and foliage).

Woke up to clear skies after last night's snowfall. So the view from our living room was slightly different :)

First morning light imposes warm pale pink and red hues onto the distant hillsides.

Nikkor 400mm f/4.5 Z, Z9, hand held.
