Lens cap N88
« on: July 16, 2022, 09:48:38 »
These caps for the Nikkor C f8 500mm reflex are rare in the UK and command a premium price around £50 when you see one for sale.

Are there any of our Japanese friends who could find one in Japan for less, including postage to the UK?

Must it be this specific cap? If not, I think there are numerous alternative caps for the 500mm reflex.

The lens filter thread size is 88mm - not a size I have found in any of the aftermarket  caps - the closest is 86mm and I have one of these on order to see if it fits or not. I also like to keep my kit authentic if possible.

$23 for the cap plus $51 postage!!

That's £62 - Ebay UK has one for £49

Unfortunately, I cannot find any reasonably priced one in Japan, but...

this one may fit and the price and the shipping to UK looks very reasonable.  The seller is located in Ukraine, but it can be worth a try...

Looks like a possibility - if the postal service is actually working from Ukraine!

Update - not only did I manage to secure a mint front cap but also the original lens hood for the lens, so that is a complete 500mm lens in excellent condition for less than £100  ;D

Is it possible to use a 2x TC200 or TC201 with this lens, I know it will affect the aperture by 2 stops but will it introduce vignetting?

First outing with the lens - found it much easier to use than the AF 70-200 which seemed to be slow in grabbing focus on rapidly moving aircraft.

Despite warnings about not getting sharp images unless on tripod this was taken handheld 800th sec f8 iso 280

It’s nice to see it being used in a normal way! I only abuse mine ;-)

Beautiful image.  :)

I caught a few of a Spitfire - one overhead  and one about 2km away with undercarriage down ready to land (heavy crop!),
