Trust me--there is a B-52 aircraft from a local Air Force base in the sky.

I made the photo while driving and several lucky things happened.  First, the sun popped out from below the clouds at the right moment.  Second, I didn't run off the road into the river below.  Third, the windshield was relatively clean.  And, finally, the exposure was within tolerances since the camera was set at aperture priority and the lens was set on ƒ/2.2 with no thought to resetting it.  It was St. Valentine's Day.  Maybe the saint was helping things alon.

Fireplane-spotting from my doorstep:

1. A seemingly beautiful day, but there is a steady activity of plains passing overhead, as wildfires are lurking everywhere, forcing evacuations and closure of the main road south to Anchorage. This activity prompts a closer look with my 500PF.

2. First out a rather rare Conair Dash 8-400AT Airtanker. This is described as the most modern airtanker in the world today, and drops pink fire retardant on some of the larger wildfires from its bulbous belly.

3. Most of the activity comes from the Canadair CL-415 "Super Scoopers". They always come in pairs, I spotted four different ones of these.

4. Soon they come back for another scoop.

5. A small single engine Pilatus PC-12 also shows up momentarily. This is used for reconnaissance to spot development of the fires.

6. Soon the wind changes and the sky takes on a hazy eerie warm tone as backdrop for one of the Super Scoopers.
