nikon 180mm 2.8 if prices
« on: January 13, 2022, 14:48:58 »
I have keep an eye for a copy of this lens for a long time and I just got one of those in very good condition. The price: 270 €. I went to see the normal second hand value to find out that it is half of what it used to be, from 600-500 now are down to 250-300. That's quite the drop. I'm guessing it is because the screwdriver af is not compatible with the Z system? Go figure. Anyway, the lens is in its way to my eager hands and I will share some images in due time.

I have also another one I have been looking for coming to me as I write this. Bought right here in NG. I was looking for this one even longer and more eagarly as I love it from the first time I try it. 16mm 3.5 fisheye. Oh yeah!

That´s it. I´m one lucky photographer.

Didn’t you already have a 16mm?

No. I had one for a few days but had to return it because of stiffness when focusing.

Oh, and you saw me using Birna’s when in Granada. Love at first sight  :)

Thats usually and easy fix, take it apart and remove the thick paste which used to be oil a few decades ago and apply fresh lube.

Did the same thing for a friends 85/1.4 Ai-S which was very hard to focus, after the new lube was applied the lens felt like new and had doubled in price :)
Cheers,
Jan Anne

Congrats on the new purchase. I am curious how different in rendition and quality this one is in comparison with the AIS.

The nice thing about "screwdriver" AF-lenses on Z-bodies is that the lens has a chip and focus points turns from red to green when focus point is in focus.
Also the aperture settings works when lens is locked to e.g. 22 (aperture controlled using wheel on body in A-mode).
It requires a FTZ adapter of course that passes the electronic information and can control the aperture.
I also have the AF 180/2.8 and it works.

I did a quick test shot with my AF 180/2.8 at 2.8 (Z50 body) at 1.6m or so (it can focus down to 1.5m).
It shows that lens is not a super achromatic lens. It has some OOF CA (purple / yellow-green)?
It is sharp and it won't be worse than this I think. Will be much better for "real" objects. Out of Focus bar-codes is not what lens is intended for.
Interesting to see images for other lens samples. Maybe I have a bad one :-)

I remember in the film-days that I was not extremely impressed by lens performance because of these OOF CA issues.

Maybe. It was stiff in one direction and very loose the other way. There was no place to repair it around and I return it to the seller. Image quality was there.

  I´ll also like an 85 1.4  ;D

Can you supply instructions on how to safely open the 85/1.4 AIS? I have one that has lube contaminated aperture blades.
