Hello Ben, welcome to NG !
The D200 is a good choice, it was the camera I kept the most years before changing for the D700. It still works to day in the hands of my son. I learned most of the digital tricks and treats through it, as I was used to film cameras (F4s and FM2n) before joining the digital wave... :-)

Just keep shooting, it"s a great way to start a new year  ;D

Good treat to start with a D200 and a 35mm lens. Living within limits probably let's you explore and understand the capabilities more easily.
