Red-rumped Parrot

Red-rumped Parrot  (Psephotus haematonotus), male. Also known as Grass Parrot. A medium sized parrot of about 28cm in length mainly a seed feeding parrot, similar to the Turquoise Parrot in colouring but has a red rump on the lower back just above the tail feathers. Hard to see the red-rump unless it is flying. This guy was feeding on Dandelion Seeds.

You can just make out the red between the end tips of the folded wings:

Nice Lance, love the colours of the bird.  Did you use that speed hoping to catch it departing?   With the D3S I often use even higher speeds for setting birds (meaning higher iso) because some birds to not give me a clue (Kingfishers) when they are going to launch.  The Rollers sort of hitch themselves up which gives me just enough time to change the speed quickly .  Great to have cameras that handle the iso so well

I used the high shutter speed on the first because idiot me forgot to drop the shutter speed down from 1/focal length x 2.  As I was using 560mm (400mm + 1.4x TCIII) it resulted in a shutter speed of 1/1250sec, which resulted in the high ISO as it was getting late in the day. I then removed the TC as I found I could get quite close to the bird, but I did keep the shutter speed at 1/focal length for the last two shots as the bird was walking about and chewing which meant I needed to keep it at the 1/focal length.
