You won't able to see any cracks because the ceramic plate is inside of the front shroud.

that eggshell looking thing is very sensitive and delicate, I have seen a few being replaced in from of my eyes before it's a 20min job. which is long for service center standards.

Update: this morning both my AFS lenses refused to work. Whatever is wrong seems to be a deteriorating condition!

.  If I understood you correctly, your camera just returned from Nikon service. Isn't it the route to the new problem? You have a warranty now, use it. Good luck!  LZ

I shipped it off this afternoon. Yes, the shutter repair is under warranty however, it is still to be determined if the problem is related or was caused by the technician. I really don't care. I just want it repaired and returned quickly.
