D750 shutter concern
« on: April 11, 2016, 06:43:45 »
Last saturday morning I was shooting a few birds in my garden. At some point i noticed a strange curved line across a photo. It looked a bit like lens flare, but i was shooting away from the sun. Looking through the rest of the photos, i first found that this line was not present in all photos (despite all photos being shot from the same position in the same basic direction in a relatively short time). I then continued looking through photos, and found in three photos a strange black object at the edge of the photo, but moving around from shot to shot. This had definately not been visible in the viewfinder.

I immediately rushed to our local Nikon agent. The technician determined that tbe shutter was broken, and showed me a visible hole in the curtain (explaining the "flare line").

My first concern is that the camera is relatively new (8 months). More worrying rhough is that they said it would take 4-6 weeks, as they had no spares in stock. They had some on order, but these were already allocated.

Since then i have received a couple of e-mails from them saying that the repair will take longer than expected, as there is a worldwide shortage of spares.

So the question is, does anybody here know if there is an inherent problem with the D750's shutter?

yes it is, on some production units :o :o :o
here in nikon tokyo, everytime i send my D750 in for servicing they would check my SN and see if my unit was affected. ::)
worldwide shortage of parts? maybe. the D750 is such a high selling model not only that they might have to send it off elsewhere hence the turnaround. i would be happy this way rather than the bad service with the D600

Richard - how would one know if a specific model is one of the "afflicted" bodies?
I wonder if one can insist on a replacement - since the body is still so new.

While the consumer laws differ world wide, I would be surprised if you were allowed to have replaced something that didn't show actual problem?

If, on the other hand, your camera had the described pinprick shutter issue manifested and your shutter unit hence was replaced, you actually have a camera with a new "heart".

On a technical side, getting a hole in the shutter curtains could either be a defect in manufacture, or the curtains were - literally - exposed to the sun (focused sunlight by a lens pointing towards the sun). Any camera maker warn against pointing the lens towards the sun for a longer time than required to get the shot. For a DSLR the reflex mirror eschews the danger of a bad sunburn in most situations, but I have seen sunburnt rear lens caps that looked really bad.

Nikon issued several statements on the D750 and the affected SN. i saw them on their site a couple of times as an advisory :o :o :o

Elsa, there have been two service advisories for the D750.  If you go to a Nikon site , go to Support and then Service Advisories.  When you open each one you will be asked to fill in the serial number to see if your body is affected.  Mine was supposedly affected in the first but not the second.  My Nikon Service manager said if I was not experiencing any problem, wait until the Warranty was almost up (or even after  ;) ) and send it in.  He said that way I would at least get a free service  :) .

Funny, but I thought there had been an earlier advisory  .  Guess short term memory is the first to go  :(

I have not heard of anyone getting a replacement camera.

Thanks for the replies.

Just to clarify, they stated right away that the repair would be done under warranty, so no problem there.

What concerns me is whether the new shutter will last.

Tom: I believe it is the same service advisory, they simply expanded the advisory to include more cameras, mine included. I haven't experienced any issue though, so I guess I might just do as the service manager told you and wait to get it fixed.

Peter, good to know your problem will be addressed under warranty.

Here in Japan, there is a dedicated page in the official Nikon website where you can enter the serial number of your own D750 to see if it is affected.  Like this (you see the empty rectangle to enter the serial number.):
