Nikon Roadshow D5 & D500; my day out.
« on: February 02, 2016, 21:37:56 »
Today I have been to Manchester to the Nikon Roadshow for the D5 -D500.

It's been a long day much to tell but posting with my iPhone isn't the easiest.  I had a fondle with the D5, D500 and a D610.  There were more exotic lenses than you could shake a stick at! 😀  I tried as many as I could.

One of the overriding impressions I came away with was the huge viewfinder of the D5, it was like looking through a shop window compared with my D300s.  I remember in the D5 thread somebody asked for a photo of the underside of the focusing screen.  I have taken one and will post it in this thread when I get home.

The Nikon technicians have cleaned both my D200 and my D300s inside and out. They even cleaned the 50mm f1.4. 😀

I took a family group pic of the D5, D500 and my D200,  again I can't easily post them now.

Starting to get writers cramp so signing off for now.

Was it you Thomas?  Glad you looked at my somewhat cryptically named thread. I have looked at the image on the D300 screen and I think it shows all you can expect.

Did you tried the D500 with the 200-500?
This would be my combo of choice, thanks.

OK, not long got back.  Firstly Thomas an image of the front and the underside of the focusing screen of the D5.  Not particularly good, the table where the cameras and lensed were was directly into the bright sun. 50mm 1.4 wasn't ideal for closeups, but enough of the excuses, here we go.

D5 front:

Crop of the lens mount and mirror box:

Hope they give you the view you wanted.  The clip central to the front of the focus screen looks as though it *might* release the screen but it may not.

Not sure what to say really...

iPhone pic.

Despite leaving home just after six, I arrived just too late for the coffee. The presentation had started.  I restricted myself to sampling the lenses,  of which were was a dazzling array from 10.5 Fish to 800mm tele, from 200 f2 to a couple of PC lenses, with almost everything in between.  I was pretty much overwhelmed by it all.  The technicians were busy cleaning sensors and lenses, doing a painstaking job.  My D200 and D300s are beautifully clean now.

I particularly handled the D5 and was very impressed with the viewfinder, so big, bright and clear, the data at the bottom is much better in bright white figures, hopefully they dim in poor light, everything felt 'just right'.  The D500 was very nice, as far as I was concerned far better without the add on battery compartment, once I had taken that off it felt much better, yet the D5 felt even better in my hands, hard to explain.

I also handled the D610 which was also on display alongside the D7200 and numerous D4 and D4s's

This was a little fun on my part, a family snap, D5, my D200 and the D500 sans battery pack.

Sorry, Chris and Frank, I saw the 80-400, the 200- 500 may well have been on one of the tripods, there were at least six big lenses set up on tripods, from 800 down.  Zooms don't excite me much so I didn't much look at them.

I would have loved to have brought a 16mm fish away though...  ;D

This is the first Nikon Roadshow I have been to, so as I said I was a bit overwhelmed with it all.  There are another five roadshows around the UK from now to the end of February, so there are plenty opportunities to see them. Presumably in other countries also?

Hej, thanks Seapy!
Seems the machines left some impression on you, in a positive way.
Were you thinking about changeabiltiy of the focussing screens?
I think I read that from you posting.
Did the buttons and knobs feel well placed?
How were the displays?

I think I am the one who asked for an image of the focusing screen and the catch as reflected in the mirror, however my request was for the D500 screen rather than the D5. The reason is that I am curios if the same screen is used as in the D300 and D7100/7200. The focusing screen catch in particular could give a hint if the same design is used.

So sorry Øivind, it was just from memory that I suddenly remembered somebody had asked about the focus screen.  I have to say I didn't look at the D500 screen, in fact it was some time before I found the D500, it was fitted with the 'motor drive' so I didn't recognise it.

My general impression was both the D5 and the D500 worked naturally for me, I didn't dig deeply into the menus but everything just fell to my fingers but my needs are simple I just want to take photographs! Not that interested in sophisticated features.  For me the D500 felt much better after taking the battery compartment off, while the D5, while something of a brick, felt perfect, especially with the larger, heavier lenses, better balanced.  At one stage I did feel my arms hanging off, hand holding the D5 with the 300 f2.8 when I had been trying to follow and lock focus on seagulls flying around the river.  I didn't really get the hang of it.  The focus point was dancing about all over the screen, locking onto the busy background at times but I am sure it was operator error!  Never having used an AF 300 f2.8 before.  I am used to follow focus on a monopod, with MF the buttery smooth focus my lens has makes it relatively easy to keep with footballers etc. BIF isn't something I do much, it would probably be easier with a clear sky.

My advice is if anybody has a particular interest go to your nearest NPS Roadshow and sample the bodies and lenses. It's very relaxed, nobody bothers you and you can get your sensors and lenses cleaned up too.

Thanks for the report, I reserved a seat at one next week.  Looking forward to trying various lenses out! ☺  Still  need to decide on a wide focal length, and this may be one of the only times in my life I will be able to handle a 200mm f/2  :P
