Focal lengths, Formats, B&W vs Colour:- Ralph Gibson on the Art of Photography

Hosted by Leica. This is a wide ranging discussion led by Dr Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman / Owner of Leica interviewing the legendary Ralph Gibson. He emphasizes key roles of focal lengths (yes primes) with respect to 36 x 24 format, and notably the aspect ratio of FX. This has much broader context besides lenses but they are focus [
] the discussion....
Anyway I much enjoyed this interview... intriguing explanations (Gibson holds strong opinions!) about Colour vs B&W as well as key strengths of his favourite focal lengths. I particularly appreciated his injection of the history and philosophy of art writ large.

Thanks for pointing my attention to this, Woody. It was interesting to hear Gibson's take on lenses for sure, but also his observation on the different way photographers who started with film and darkroom work with digital processing vs. those who came later and never dealt with film and darkroom.

Does Nikon offer a monochrome solution to e.g. Z-bodies?
It will mean removal of bayer pattern filter and then more light pr. pixel?

Nikon doesn't offer any IR convertions
You need to get it done by third party I have never heard of it done on a Z!

Ok, so it can be done without modification of the firmware in the camera.
If the RAW file is just pure pixel values….then why not. And the exposure also adapt "automatically" to the more light which hits the sensor without the Bayer filter.
Then there is the RAW converter software. It probably still thinks it is color RAW data and will try to create colors using the "Bayer algorithm"......just thinking loud…..
But this may be another topic as in this thread……
I wondered a bit that monochrome Leicas seems to be more expensive than color versions?

The issue is indeed the firmware, to get the full potential out of the sensor a dedicated firmware is optimal.
Well,,, it's Leica, everything special or limited edition is pricey
But yes, these need their own firmware and must be very low volume
