I don't understand how you find the HL "far from natural"!
What is natural in a circular LED lit situation? The shape of
the light source, for a start, is not natural.


Yes, there is a hot spot there but it is way less than the one
from a flash since (at this distance) very few LED are reflec-
ted and that's what explains why it is not at 255 but at 232.


There are more conclusions to be pulled out of a test like this.

It would be helpful to note the specific model of light, and tell with what lens/camera and at what distance the sample shot was made. A measurement of the illumination intensity at the working distance would be useful, and showing a photo of the setup would be an extra bonus.

At this point, I'm very pleased by the larger light source. This
one I equipped with a vellum donut to unify the presence of the
many LEDs successfully though it soaks a bit of the output.

I used a "SG60NPLL" mounted on a AF 105 macro / D3S.
The capture was at 800 ISO, HH 1/60, ƒ 9 and +/- 30 cm.
