For my favourite lens for table top to infinity work, the 5.6/120mm APO Digitar from this series:

http://www.schneiderkreuznach.com/en/photo-imaging/product-range/photo-lenses/products/large-format-lenses/digital-lenses/apo-digitar/

the image circle is given at infinity and f=11 with 15cm. Means: You can do a huge lot of shifting on the back standart and "scan the image circle"

"Image circle" in Schneider terms is defined as "at least 90 lines per millimeter resolution".

You are out there. You and your camera. You can shoot or not shoot as you please. Discover the world, Your world. Show it to us. Or we might never see it.

For a medium format lens that could perform on FX/35mm one might consider a Xenotar 80/2.8 or perhaps a 100/2.8 or 150/2.8. I've cropped a negative down to 24x24mm with excellent results from an 80/2.8 Xenotar on a Rollei TLR.

I've never owned the 100/2.8 but at a time I really wanted a 6x9 Crown Graphic for hiking.

......  If Nikon would get off their butts, what I probably really need is just a 50 Mpx sensor with larger photosites and I would be happy.

I'm sort of confused by this comment.

If it's a 50Mp MF (or larger format) camera you need, then why not just get one!?

That's basically what you're wanting here .. a greater amount of pixels AND larger photosites .. from Nikon, who currently make cameras no larger than 135 format!
There's no reason to expect that they will ever do so .. and even if they did, it'd be hideously expensive(eg. compared to the Pentax 645z!)

So just do yourself the favour and get a 645z!  ;D
