Need a "new" wide angle for Nikon
« on: January 03, 2016, 19:13:19 »
Hi,

i need your advice: I own a 20mm F3.5 Ai. Works fine, but is not really sharp in the Corners. At F11 it is ok, but then the center performance is "gone". I do not need it very often, but when...
So i need your advice: The 20mm 1.8G is for sure a big improvement, but too expensive for 5-6 times in a year. What about the 20mm 2.8 AF-D? Is it much butter? Or the 18-35G zoom? Any opinion is welcome!

The 20/2.8 AIS or AF-D will marginally be better. They share the same optical formula. Stopping down to 5.6 is the minimum to get acceptable overall sharpness.

In addition, they flare easily. This is why I bought a 20/3.5 UD, which however needs stopping down to f/8.0.

I'd recommend you to get a 20/1.8. You will probably use it more often!

The 18-35 is a versatile alternative and quality is pretty good as I recall.

The 24/1.8 is perhaps the optimal candidate if price is not a deterrent. It is really a good performer.

Hi,

ok, just a little upgrade, not worth the money. My brother owns the new 20mm 1.8. I try to lend me his copy... A zoom would also be to much: I own a good 35mm.

I had an Ais 20/2.8 in my D3 period and while it had pronounced wave distortion, it did give an impression of being "sharp" edge to edge once stopped down a couple of stops.  I haven't used it on the D800.
