Frank, it takes a great photographer to use a 300mm lens as a street photography lens on a DX camera!
Some of the framing and bokeh are just stunning!

Frank, excellent subject isolation with the 300mm. You have an excellent eye to pick up all these details.

I really like how you captured Lumi, and Jakov as well with the red "halo"

Here is another Maastricht impression

A shame we had to leave early, but a it turned out we had a long trip ahead of us. We missed the above group shot, yet my Nikon F and Kristinas Nikkormat would have complimented that group so nicely :)

I moved, I merged, I renamed the topics :)

It was great fun to see old and meet new friends!
Aleksandra measured that we walked about 9km today. Couple that with about 500km of driving and you figure out that it has been a fruitful day.
Luckily I had good Company around me at all time, I had my comfortable Adidas shoes, and let's not forget El Presidente who swallowed the roads with ease.

I have made about 400 images that I need to go through carefully and I will post as I have some processed.

Buddy, good that you made it home with your lovely family!

Nice groupsportrait, Werner ;)

Also a lot to process.  Here same one as in 366 day topic :)

Thank you Jakov. Soon to be expanded family, which was another reason we had to leave early. Kristinas bloodpressure dropped a bit because of the heat and few places to shelter for the sun. She still had a nice, when taxing day today.

John, excellent work with a lovely lens ;) I just don't know another lens that can make transitions from focus to OoF like the 105 f2,5 Sonnar, except for the 135 f3,5 Nikkor-Q.C maybe.

The street this shot was taken in is called Groote Staat (without the R)

Here is one of the few candids I managed. The fish-eye can leave John upright while making all other people walk in a different plane in one shot ;)

It does indeed, and unfortunately an afternoon doesn't suffise to find the more interesting ones. I spent a lot of time there walking the streets at night where the play of light from the old fashioned lanterns and shadows from the old buildings on the cobblestone streets does a lot to increase the uniqueness of Maastricht. Unfortunately it takes a brave hiker to travel to all of them by foot as many of the more interesting sites are far from the city center.

Still, the city center does offer a lot already. It was also a bit of a shame the Sint Servaas church doors remained closed.

A little about my day today.
I got up early around 7 this morning. Made coffee, enjoyed the view, baked some buns in the oven and repacked my camera bag for what feels lik ethe 10th time (must have been more though)

We once more agreed to be back early because Amy would have to stay at home (bringing two dogs into a bustling city is a bit straining for a pregnant woman).
Our first stop was a small parking lot at the edge of the forests where we often go to let the dogs run free a bit. Lumi was allowed to play around for a short while and I tried to set the GPS navigation to our destiny, Maastricht.

The GPS device is officially dead!

With my knowledge of Maastricht we just took off without satnav. It took us 45 minutes to come to the outskirts of Maastricht where I noticed that the exit we wanted to take to find to the parkinglot was closed due to construction work. I quickly darted off an earlier exit and we cam in through the North of Maastricht. Made our way to the MECC from there.... where the brakes of our car failed. We had no brakes at all at that stage, so I parked the car (EUR 6 for the whole day folks ;) ) and we started walking to the Cafe Zondag.

Because of these unforseen hassles we were just a bit late, so I called Jakov and asked him to hold the crew there for a little while longer.

The events of the morning unfolded. We met the nice NG bunch, had far too few conversations and the weather was quite taxing on Kristina. Lumi in the meanwhile had a pretty good time, even though she was a bit too excited and needed to be calmed down on the one or other occasion.

I was actually quite glad when we made a short stop for coffee. And after that we decided to go back to the car to find a way to get home.

I called the ADAC and the first thing I heard is "we will send out a towtruck which will bring you home" Thank goodness! That shouldn't take to..... "They should be with you in about 2 hours so hold on" .... damn!

While waiting we met a nice couple who allowed Kristina to use their bathroom and brought us a bottle of water. Hospitality can be such a great good to those who need it, and we could do with a little hospitality at the time.  About 2 hours after the initial phone call a big yellow truck stopped, we mounted the car on the truckbed and made our way.... to Aachen.

As things worked out the to wtruck company had no intention of bringing us home. Not enough personell for the 1 hour drive they said. While still on the way to Aachen I called the ADAC again. Informed them of the situation, but as much as I was promised "things will be straightened out" nothing got straighter and we were finally dumped in Aachen.

From there I would get a rental car and our car should be brought to our home tomorrow. Again, a lot of promises that were not kept. In the end I had to choose between getting a rental or having my car brought home but I couldn't have both without me paying for either one.

More promises and more breaking of those later, and after another 10 phone calls I finally made arrangements to have someone drive 200km to pick us up. Heroes do exist. The tow truck company threw us out at around half past 7. We still had to wait an hour and a half in the cold. Our car locked away. Fortunately we took our camera gear out, but we forgot our jackets. We got home at around 10 in the evening. Our car should be delivered tomorrow, but I will have to see if that will really happen before I believe it.

I really fealt a bit stranded in the middle of Aachen. No wonder that I feel so at home in the middle of a forest where all of these logistics, politics and false promises are like myths and fairy tales from a world far away from mine.

Oh, Buddy & enlarging family.

What! An! Oddysey!

Great to hear you are safe back home. Looking forward to all the pictures you took. I already love the Lumi shot in #9. What a wonderful friendly and lifely dog! What nice colors and composition. The form of the dog and the church behind seem a perfect match, the frame inside the cast iron "egg" is inspiring too!

My one camera (D500), one lens (300PF) day was quite fruitful. Most of the shots are just opened in Capture NX-D, then saved as TIFF without change and resized.

As a starter three abstracts

1) rain drop
2) fence in evening light
3) my unsharp photo of the day *;)

In Maastricht John was kind enough to lend me his 35-70 f3,5 Ai zoom. Even though I use a 55mm prime most of the time, I have som eproblem adjusting to the 35-70mm zoom range. Odd, but with the medium wide to medium tele range from 28-about 105mm I really adapt better to primes for photography where from about 100mm upwards I prefer a good zoom.

On the 35-70 f3,5 Ai, it's a very nice and sturdy lens with a two ring design. It is already sharp wide open so with an f3,5 open aperture I did not see a need to stop it down.

Here is a picture I made which, on my screen, shows me how nicely sharp the lens is. It has some vignetting wide open on th ewide end, is almost free of vignetting on the long end. I would say it is an excellent performer for candids in confined areas like gardens, events and indoors.

And after a good cup of coffee this was the last shot I made while in Maastricht. Waiting for the film from the Nikon F to be developed. I made a few photos of events and sights in Maastricht with the meterless F and my 5cm f2 Nikkor-S, the same lens used to photograph this delicious (finished) cappucino.

While waiting in Aachen Lumi told us that she wanted her car back real bad. We should go into the towtruck company office and surrender so they would give us the car back

Kristina explained Lumi that this would not work today, so next time she sees one of the men in yellow, she's allowed to be mean. This is them measuring the level of meanness that should still be ok.

Beautiful work Frank, and also from Kons.

Wider zooms take some time to get really used. Practically with a 35-70 it finds most use at the both ends, 35mm and 70mm, preventing to change to two (or three) different primes, especially when there is little room to manoeuvre.

Thank you Frank. Sometimes I develop that way on purpose, sometimes (like yesterday) it just happens while I process the files to make them appear the way I feel is correct.

Thank you all as well on the nice commenst on our little family. My first two children (Amy and Lumi) are quite furry and walk on all fours. I hope our daughter will be a bit different (and I also hope she doesn't do tricks for treats too much because that can be quite taxing at times) ;)

The Angenieux can most certainly hold it's own next to the modern 58mm f1,4 lens. I believe it's one of those lenses that will never get old, show it's age or become "obsolete" It will also never lose it's relevance or value for that matter. And those are my thoughts based on the work you show here John. I only read a few reviews and old documents on the Angenieux before I saw your work.

Your photo of the 3 of us under those ancient arches is a nice one. I like it a lot :)

Frank, there isn't much of a montage to that photo other then adding the banner. While we were waiting to be picked up in Aachen Kristina hung the Nikkormat around Lumis neck and held up the camera. I was there just in time to take the picture :)

Frank, I just asked Kristina. She filled up the remaining 10-15 shots on a roll of Fuji Superia Xtra 400 in her Nikkormat with 50mm f1,4 K which she converted to Ai herself (under my guidance). The D800 with 85mm f1,4 stayed in the bag all day. The roll is on it's way to be developed, along with the roll of Ilford HP5+ from my Nikon F with which I took a few shots as well on Sunday. We will post results as soon as we scanned the negatives :)

Lot of great shots… I particularly like Bruno’s “Stokstraatwartier .. Station” shot - marvelous.
Peter’s portraits are awesome.
Frank’s “a singer, a band, friends” - what a lovely shot!! Beautiful colors. Was it your 35/1.4?

Congratulations on finding your roots as well as one of the finest mechanical cameras ever made.
Kristina now owns my old FM2, but I still have an FM, two F's, an F2 and an F3 ;)

The red dot 1965 F I had with me sees the most use these days. The camera just inspires to take pictures. Thinking of the camera now just gave me inspiration for a staged photo. More on that later today in a different thread ;)

Yes :)  I even have a shot when you are shooting.  The Angenieux doesn't look too bad among the 58/1.4.   Did you like the Raw-file?

At first sight the differences are not huge. I compared 2 shots of Hans from the samen angle and distance as well as distance to the background, although one was in portrait, the other in landscape. 58mm taken f4 and the Angenieux at f2.5. The Angenieux seems to be a bit more contrasty. The 58 separated the subject (Hans) better. The bokeh looked somewhat nicer, perhaps due to the contrast differences. The 58 seemed sharper but that may have been me misfocusing the Angenieux.

Having said that, I think the Angenieux is an incredible lens! If I can get one at a reasonable price, I will buy it instantly and get rid of the Nikon 35-70 AF-D. It is an amazing lens.

Obviously at 1.4 the 58mm is tough to beat by any lens in overall IQ.

Here is a selfie dedicated to BEZ :)

A church of red stone from which John and I got thrown out as if we were bandits :)

And the rainbow crossing that can also be found in Tilburg...

At this point I figured out that I would annoy Akira because I was only making images with a circular fish-eye. It must be inertia from Scotland that kicked in...

Excellent photography allround.

If I would have to pick a few of the favorites so far, the way Thomas did, then I would have to say that the photos that left a permanent impression are:

-Thomas' Gear Porn shot. I mean, when you cause an increase in the local concentration of photographers, THAT is bound to happen!
-Franks #8 image from the #4 post in this thread. Red leaves against a red and dark green background
-John's shored boats in post #14
-Kons' top down view on the book shelf in the church, with cables leading to the sheld suggesting wisdom is either drained from those books and led somewhere or comes from outside and is fed into these pages. Very well seen!
-Franks portrait of John in post #24
-As far as narrative value is concerned, John, you win the first price with your photo and commentary in post #43, the bunch of tourists refusing to register the existance of Maastrichts city hall
-Peter, I like all the B&W portraits taken with the Angenieux 35-70, but #2 is my favorite
-Jakov's circular fish eye shots were spectacular as well. My favorite, this one:
http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3723.0;attach=14719;image
-Thomas' detail of Schmeck Brillen as another one of those shots I would have never seen myself. Excellent eye there

John, I see you made good use of that 105mm. Both shots from the Vrijthof and the earlier B&W you showed us are proof of how well this lens can perform in the hands of a capable photographer. I really like how the subtly unsharp background still clearly shows the buildings but seperates them from the main subjects. I also like how you included the classic Vrijthof streetlight in the first shop and the disturbed balance/gravity between the guy on the bike measuring up against the huge steel pavillion. The sandals and cellphone really make that image work, as funny as it may sound to pay attention to such details

Finally, I can join in! Thank you all for a wonderful day, I really enjoyed your company and walking the streets of Maastricht. I hope we meet again soon.
Frank, I really cannot choose which one of your photos I love the most: people, street corners, every photo is really amazing! Maybe those “red” ones made the biggest impression. :-) Your son is really a lovely young boy and he makes great photos! I love the one in the church with a very nicely dressed man walking away.
Buddy, congratulations on a new family member! I am sorry to hear you had such a tiring day, but I am glad that everything turned out well in the end (although it took a really long time). The shot of Lumi is amazing, she really is a wonderful dog.
John, Harald, your pano photos are really great, as well as Peter’s photos of NG members (except mine, but that is on the model and not the photographer!:-))
Jakov, great fishy as usual! I loved loved loved photo of you and Frank! I am so sorry that Bez could not join us. :-)
Thomas, amazing shots of the church. Nicole, I love your after party photo! Werner – lovely photos of some of the NG members! Bruno – what a great photo of the street sign! I was really enjoying going through all the photos, it is really difficult to choose!
And here is my modest contribution.

Akira, I believe that it’s a permanent book store. Thanks
Nicole and Thomas caught the church tower majestically between the branches!
Werner, Frank and I are very close friends as clearly depicted in your photos :)
Werner, the yellow mini and umbrella are fantastic! Peter is a model!
Thomas is a talented photographer, he can use any lens and create a great image just like the portrait of Denis.
Thomas, I like the way you photographed my coffee with the bandits in the background!
Aleksandra’s shots of the square, the globe in the bookstore, the invito feet and the romantic couple are great!
John always knows how to capture a great moment. Frank showing of his skills and my sceptic face :)

Jakov: the glow is from the X100T wide open.
I contemplated to cut out the remains of B.
yet K. Is clearly referring to him via body
language while Lumi is on guard as always.

During lunch I tried out the 135 DC for what it's meant for and that is taking portraits!

Allow me to present you:

Bandit Konstantin (Frank's son who claims that he is the opposite of his father)
Bandit Joost (my new friend from Leuven who may organise an NG get together in Belgium)
Bandit Hans (the host in Maastricht)
Bandit Bruno (possible future host with Joost)
Bandit John (the one and only Tilburg street photographer)

When I was shooting the outside of the church the Sunday Service was still ongoing ... rushing into the church, taking lots of shots with two cameras, being rushed out by church personnel ... all took 5 minutes ... gosh ... I love it that German churches are generally open to the public. Places of quiet amidst the noise of the city.

Werner, I like the close up portraits in #136! Very Sharp!
The trial images in #137 are very good too! I like them blurry :)
John’s BW café shot in #144 is his trademark. Capturing the moment of friends gathering is something you master. Konstantin also turned out great outside the coffee shop!
Thomas caught the bandits majestically in #147. One can clearly see the gear chit chats and showing off of various equipment.
#148 Thomas recorded how Harald matched his shirt with the outside furniture :)
#150 Harald captured the pro stance of Hans! I have never ever seen anybody holding a camera so professionally.
#152 Harald excited about the walk ahead. Bravo Thomas!
#153 #154 # 155 Thomas captured the bandits getting together for the group fish-eye shot. It went smoothly :)
#159 Bruno caught me enjoying Frank’s shooting :)
#160 It seems that Bruno has a thing for women in uniforms :D And in the same post, who did you make stand behind the door and plead for mercy?
#166 Thank you Frank for the organ shots.

We have made some really nice photos during our gathering. I can hardly wait for the next one!

Hi to all,

What a nice day in Maastricht. It was my first experience with you and I really appreciate.
I like the diversity of the personalities I see in your pictures.

My pictures are ready but I can't open my program. My pc is full and I think that it is the reason why photoshop can't be open. Too less memory probably.

I'll do my best to save my files on a new disk quickly but I also preparing the two next exhibitions (june and september), I'ill do my best to do it as soon as possible.

'Da Boom Bop Bop'

'Time for another collection.
Since page 6 I like the following:

Nicole, your gloomy interpretation of the tower in #92 stays. It's really gloomy! (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56069.html#msg56069)
Bruno's steep organ view in #105. Bruno, that's another perfectly impressive up view shot! (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56088.html#msg56088)
Aleksandra, the globe and the vault in #116 are perfectly mixed-lighted, which gives a nice inscrutable touch. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56116.html#msg56088)
Jakov, the diagonal cut with sparkling yellows stands out in #129. That's a clever way of enhancing the perceived contrast and preventing distraction from the subject.  (http://56116)
John, that's an astonishing multi relations group shot with many things going on in the group in #144 (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56226.html#msg56226)
Harald, your splendid head shot in #150 is noteworthy. Klick! (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56242.html#msg56242)
Joost, your warm up shot in #171 is remarkable, very well seen. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56322.html#msg56322)
Hans, Harald outside the window in #188 is priceless. Big time. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56365.html#msg56365)
Bruno, another upview in #191 I which I like in its well set geometrics and steep perspective. These are all great. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56375.html#msg56375)
Harald, the city hall stitch in #197 give a good impression of the place. Nice wide sky above and space around. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56403.html#msg56403)
Joost, among the pictures in #201 I think the bw portrait of John stands out. A study full of character. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56458.html#msg56458)

A lot more good ones have been posted,- I hope for more to come and look at. I'm again pleasantly surprized how different a scene can be seen by the individuals.

Now I am presenting you Don John and Capo Jakov, just released from the Maastricht Fort Prison on the grounds of insufficient evidence. They are contemplating where to go first after spending unjust time behind bars...  8)

I think we should make that gear pile-up a standard in future NG get togethers, and I intend to be there to be part in that tradition ;)

Jakov, you just found the sweet spot in processing that one. Excellent pick of participants, of the right pose and angle, framing, excellent crop and most excellent processing!

Instant Fear and Loathing! (Just add water)

To quote HST, "There he goes. One of Gods own prototypes. A high powered mutant of sorts, never even considered for mass production"
That photo says it all! Two individuals, united with one goal. To take the greatest and best photo in the world. Tribute!

Buddy, those are extremely nice words. Thank you so much!
The first pile up took place in South Africa back in 2009 when the Crew first met.
It was the most impressive pile up because of all the super tele lenses. I contributed with the 45P :D
I agree with you perfectly, let's make it a tradition together with the fish-eye group shot, with two dogs next time ;)
The "Don John Capo Jakov" photo would not have been so successful had we not the bond...

Martine does not have a computer she has an Apple.

She is really sweet and does not know a Hardrive from RAM or
Application or OS ... I recommended to her visiting an Apple store
and tell them to make a BACKUP of her DATA to an external Harddrive

and then solve her trouble with her OS and Applications

can someone PLEASE translate that in to Apple Speak?

Thank you.

Her Photography is exceptional!

Someone save it from her Computer Expertism.

Buddy, I am glad you like the silhouette, thanks!
#171 Joost, the kid on the scooter is extra special! #175 The portraits are also nice, although my screen gives a bit more red than normal?
#176 Thomas caught a humorous display of photographers photographing their photo gear with their smartphones.
#182 Thomas, I simply love the yellow color splattered on a structure of order!
#186 Thomas, you again! The colors and design are extra!
#188 Hans, the photo of Harald looking through the window is priceless!
#195 Harald, I like the café shot and Werner sipping his coffee!

Today is one year of Nikongear and I am so proud  :)
Attached an IR fish-eye image of all our gear, appropriately marking our anniversary.
Thank you all for being a part of our photo community and may it continue for many more years to come!!!!

EDIT: replace the colored version that i didn't like with a BW one :)

Thanks, Jakov,- it was a great day with great companionship but photography was posing a great challenge - I had a hard time getting in the flow.

Harry, the 35/1.4 paints the light just right how we experienced it under the trees. #226 (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56540.html#msg56540)
You also managed to handle the yellowish lest tint well. I think it may be supportive for this kind of situation.

The pic named Jakov has a different lens drawing which I find quite pleasant. #227 (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,3723.msg56541.html#msg56541)

Are these colors real????
Yes, why?
There was more or less only filtered bright late afternoon light
falling through the leaves.

I spot metered one of the branches as a reference value
And the sky is almost hidden by leaves,
Which allowed for the quite bright exposure.

The Df thought it even more on the yellow side
Which I corrected a little to match the perception.

Else it's a sensitive balance and depends very much on the screen.

Indeed, it look like the persons were cooperative (while not "acting", so I won't have used "staged" in that context). Getting cooperation (complicité would be the right word in French) is indeed the most difficult thing in street shots with strangers. Congrats again.

Is it possible to put a message with a selective manner under each photo ?

Only if you link photos hosted elsewhere ... like on flickr ...

But you can post thre photos and put text up front like

#1 -- peter
#2 -- paul
#3 -- mary

Martine, yours are very convincing captures.

Noon and lunch, lighting was rough. I liked to get a drawing style still life background. Not sure if I got there.

Martine, do you attach the pictures (at the bottom of the white window)?

If not, you need to host them somewhere, like Flickr, Zenfolio, Smugmug, or some other service. Then, you link to it from NG.

Otherwise, the forum software cannot show the pictures to other people than yourself.

The tree you take Yakov is actually so little and isolated but in ten years this one will be so big that it will cover the house. So meeting there then and see the atmosphere in the street :-). Nice pic.
L'image vit aussi sur les feuilles vertes - it must be interesting in winter time as well. Very grey, a lost scene then.

Desaturated the greens to bring out the reds even more?  :o

Either way, I like the final result :)
