Title: Tamron 15-30 F/2.8
Post by: HCS on May 03, 2016, 22:28:56
I've bought the Tamron 15-30 F/2.8 [fill alphabet soup here]. I've only received it today, so started shooting some pictures to get acquainted with it. Nothing fancy and certainly not a formal lens test. Just stuff i'd like to use a wide angle for.

Feel free to comment, i'll be posting more as i go along. Two to start it off, first one a 3-image stack, second one straight into the sun (well uhm, a tree in front of it).

Those scenes remind me of open spaces in the Southeastern US.  I don't see any CA's around the bare branches against the sky, which is good.

with 15mm you can create alps in The Netherlands - at least I see in your pics, that you would be able to do it.
The lens looks promising, my only worries to exchange my Nkkor 17-35 against the Tamron is the mass...
but I am tempted

Looks good so far!
Thomas:  Don't exchange without trying first.  At best, keep both.

Thanks Ron. The CA seems under control, but i haven't explicitly tested for it. I can think of some situations where the lens would be tested more.

On the area, it's very close to my home (NL, Hapert, Cartier heide), but it is not by any stretch of imagination an open space. It is actually part of a forest with some open space with heather. It is very nice for a Sunday afternoon stroll with the kids though  :D

Thanks Thomas. At 15mm, every little bump seems like a mountain in the distance  8)

I agree on the weight, it's kept me away initially, looking at the Nikon 20 F/1.8 very interested. It must be a good lens, but i'm glad i chose the Tammy because of the zoom (i'm usually a prime lens guy). It actually balances quite nicely on the D810.

I'd say, go ahead and try one (in the shop or rent one). It is generally compared to the mighty 14-24 on performance, go figure.

Thanks Keith.

Keeping both, wow, daring. I only had permission for one  :P

I too have this lens, and am really impressed with it.

Do you mind if i add a couple of photos to your thread?

By all means, please do add to this thread. I started it because there wasn't one about the Tammy 15-30, really.

I, too, am rather impressed by it.

Thank you Hans.

I bought this lens mainly for astro-landscape photography. Because it is pretty sharp even wide open, it does this very well.

So too is it excellent for wide landscapes:

Eehhh ... wow!

You didn't tell me you were going to post such great pictures  :D :D :D

Great shots, i especially like the night shots.

Unlike any other lens in it's class, it features VR (or whatever Tamron call it), which makes it great for indoor shots where tripods are frowned upon, as you can get sharp photos down to 1/2 second or even slower!

Thanks for the compliment Hans.

These night shots are among my favourite subjects, but the biggest challenge is to create opportunities to do so. I need to travel at least 150km, and it needs to be a dark night (crescent moon), and even then the milky way is only visible for about half the year.

For interest, all my shots here were taken with D750. The first star photo is 30 seconds at f2.8 and ISO of around 10 000

I think i could travel 150 Km in any direction and not find enough darkness for shots like yours. I'd like to, once or twice. Somehow this links to staying up really late, or getting up really early. Times i generally spend otherwise  ;D

I really like the indoor car shots. I have yet to give the VR a real try. I have never had any lenses with VR, so i'd have to get used to that as well. Good personal challenge.

Thank you Hans. As mentioned in another thread, i bought this lens mainly for star photos, but there are some others that may have been almost (or even just as) good for that, but the Tamron won because of it's versatility, primarily due to the VR, as my sister-in-law who is an estate agent sometimes wants me to take photos to advertise house interiors.

Time you come visit South Africa?

Hans, time you come visit South Africa?

Peter, oh, how i would like that (and many other places btw). But, not this year, because this year i was allowed one lens  8) 8) 8)

Some other subjects, a little bit close-up this time.

And ... two to check on CA. I did turn off CA removal in capture one. There is some, but not all too bad, given the situation (shooting from shadow towards open sky).

Thanks John, but the great stuff is from Peter  ;)

I believe it is a versatile lens, the range from 15-30 mm is a useful one for me.

Yes, it's a very useful range. One of the reasons I always kept my 17-35/2.8

Two bokeh examples. Wide angles are not famous for their bokeh, however the Tammy is not bad at all. I know it's not the greatest, but at 30mm the bokeh is rather pleasant, if not a bit sharply defined. At 15 mm it is not much to write home about, but ... i've seen worse from longer lenses. All in all i'm quite satisfied with this.

I would like to ask an OP if it is possible to post 2-3 images taken with the old 20-40 Tamron, to compare an old 25-years technology, or it is a bad idea and better to start a new topic?  THX!   LZ

That's OK when it is for comparison purpose. But, let's keep the thread about the Tamron 15-30. If you have any of those, please also post, that would be interesting.

Well, it seems this thread needs some TLC. Some more with the Tammy from a recent outing. Not all have been processed "naturally"  ;D

Congratulations, Hans!

The lens gets superb reviews, e.g. at photographylife. I am sure you will be happy with it.

I had bought this lens but brought it back the next day and changed it for the 14-24. That lens was easier to hold for me. May sound stupid but it was worth the extra money to me. Do you like the handling?

As far as optical performance goes, both lenses seem to be doing very good, but I am not a lens expert. I don't think the 14-24 would have done better when I look at your photos. The flare looks nice.   I like the photo where you see the sun-stars in the air and in the water. Well spotted! BTW, nice weather; no clouds. ;-)

I ended up selling the 14-24 as I've found that I prefer 24mm and I do not like the perspectives lower than 18-20mm. Perhaps when I intend to shoot more landscapes, I may add a 18mm for those situations where 24 is not enough.

On the other hand, you can do crazy things in other fields as well. For example, the perspective works great when you shoot watches on cars, where the watch and the car could be seen in full glory. But you have to leave people out of the picture. ;-)

Anyway, enjoy the lens. You won't regret it.

Thanks Peter!

I am enjoying the lens. On my D810, it balances quite nicely. I can hold the combo at the base of the lens and the balance is neigh on perfect.

It is heavy though, but that goes for the 14-24 as well.

By the way, the pictures earlier in the thread are of some time past, not so recent. Good news, today again no clouds  8) 8)
