These photos were in the same box as the other 'Old Stuff". Same rules as last time, one photo a day and presented in the random order, identical to my gallery. All the images are circa mid 1970-ish. All the photos were shot on Broadway Street, Los Angeles. Every now and then, when things were slow at the paper, I'd stroll down Broadway Steet and take a few snaps.

I have not been on the forum for a while to see the others you posted, but I really like this one. The expression and the kid in the car.
-
Greatly enjoyed the last thread. Looking forward to this one.
-
I can hardly wait to see the girls that ended up in this box :)
-
Aaah ! A revival of "Old Stuff"... :-) Incredible light play (or extra good printing) ! With a 20mm you must have been just next to the arm of the guy ? I always marvel at those able to manage with such wide angles (I do own a 20mm AF-D) without excessive distortion and keeping the subject in focus (not the lens focus) !!!
Great one for a stroll on the avenue :-)
-
all roght ! nice to see additional old stuff
-
Great, more old Stuff. ;) Brilliant shot by the way.
-
Thank You all.
Even back in the '70's, this was an old car. I just noticed the cigarette. Cigarettes were considered bad for you back then, but today, at least in California, smoking is nearly considered a crime.
@ RobOK, I'm an old fart. A while back I stumbled upon a box of prints in the garage that was from the 1970's. I've been posting them in NG.
@ Ashlandish, I hope you're not disappointed.
@Jakov, lol ... sorry no g/f's in this gallery. I did tell Patrice that you like her.
@ Jacques, Thanks. As a news guy, I have a pretty thick skin and sticking a lens in someone's face doesn't intimidate me. But I won't shoot paparazzi style, leaving a trail of pissed off people behind me. Wellll ... let's make that I don't shoot paparazzi style very often. I have a sixth sense, a Street sense ... my gut told me this guy was all right ... and he was. After the shot he gave me a quick smile and I, in return nodded.
@ Armando, :)
@ John, Thank you. This snap pleased me.

Yes. I had to argue some, in order to rile them up and show off for the camera.

Movies = 120 minutes of hyperbole.
I do remember shooting a gang story. The LAPD had a new tactic for gang intervention. The police thought it would be better for gangs to confront each other in a sporting contest than on the streets in a firefight. The police arranged a football game between two rival gangs. (As American football is extremely violent, I didn't think choosing this sport was a wise choice.) As I waited at the school where the match was to be held, parked on the basketball court adjacent to the football field, I see two separate caravans of highly polished older cars, circling the school. After the caravans had circumnavigated the school, they all drove onto the basketball courts and the rival gangs piled out for the game. I met my gang contact and introduced myself. It was a hot summer day but he was wearing a knit cap on top of his bald head. I didn't think much of the bald head and knit cap as Jose was a gang member and both were de rigueur for gangs. But his responses were slow, slurred and distant. Soon another gang member started speaking with me. He was surprisingly articulate and everything started going as planned. Later, the articulate gang member explained to me that Jose, in the knit cap, wasn't doing so well today. Last night a knife was thrust two inches into his head. Jose couldn't get medical treatment because the hospital was located in another gang's territory. Consequently, all they could do was remove the blade and slap a bandage on top.

You had to squat for this one... :-) Impressive, as I remember the time when most kids from anywhere in the world would have toy guns ! Now it's really frown upon, and you can't even find them in shops...
-
Although your images are phenomenal Gary, I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed that the box doesn't contain Patrice :'(
Now tell us the full story with the boy and the rifle :)
-
The boy with the rifle: Expressionwise he seems to be much older than he really was at that time.
-
Ah - toy guns.... us girls loved them too!

And we all had Daisy BB guns so we can shoot out an eye from our sibling.

LOL ... she's still in pretty good shape, in her spare time she teaches aerobics and yoga.
No real story on the kid with the M-16. It was lunchtime, I was bored at work, so I took a walk down Broadway and this kid with his hand in his pocket and a toy rifle strapped around his neck was walking in the opposing direction. I took his picture and keep on walking. That's it.

:) ... find that box! (Look in the garage ... that's where I found my box.)
I like the smaller footprint of the 500 C/M. Recently I acquired a Fuji GX 680III. It is a monster. I need to make time to shoot it. But, there is nothing quite like shooting a miniature format camera on the Street.
-
Gary - you dont know what you missed! My dad laughed for a week when I got home with one :)

Maybe I can find the box but then I would have to find a scanner for them, or shoot them with the D3x ?
Yikes, it does look like a monster... :-) But then in those times I wanted a RB 6x7 Mamiya so I can understand the desire waiting to be fulfilled since youth :-)
That's what I discovered with the Bronica... People had a completely different attitude toward such cameras ! I explained it by the low waist viewfinder, meaning that people would see your eyes, vs the SLR blocking half of the face.
I found it also a great learning tool for composition, as you look at a subject with your eyes, then decide of a composition (square), then proceed to frame it, versus the SLR where you tend to move a frame over a subject till you think you have a proper composition...!

I shoot quite differently. I try to shoot thusly ... Before I use the viewfinder, I see the final image in my cream-cheese little brain, then I adjust my position and the camera (settings and focal length) to reflect what I imagined. I use the viewfinder to fine tune the framing of the image.

I agree, but of course as a guy from the "South" I've exaggerated the processes :-) But the exercice of using a waist finder (not to speak of inverted directions) is still a great schooling in street shooting :-)

Gary, all I can say is that I hope that you have hundreds of boxes stuffed with photos laying around...
Nope, that box was a complete surprise. I was pretty young when I started shooting staff for UPI, LA Times and Orange County News (late teens/early 20's). As such I still had a strong tie to my high school. I used to save all my rejects and deliver them to my old old high school teacher. Mr. Lown had/has tens of thousands of rejects (similar to what I've been posting).

Not with Tri-X. Presently, I work mainly from my home, so walking around an LA suburb isn't nearly as fruitful as a big city. When I do take a walk in a big city, it is with my digital Fuji's.

Interesting how things go.
If I look at these oldies I start to roll out film from all of my photo
career starting in 1983 with my beloved Zenith 11 in Oxford.
Then Ansterdam 1984 and Ireland and and and.
I need a decent scanner though. I got some scans that are OK.
Most of my slides are uncut and unframed. Lots of framed ones.
Uncut negatives. Cut Negatives and slides (24 Leitz case binders stuffed)
And sure some other formats.
-
great comp in this last shot !

Hey Charlie. I live in La Mirada, on the LA-Orange county line. South of Whittier, west of Fullerton, north of Cerritos. I had some friends who used to live in Mt. Washington, interesting area with some great homes.

This sign holder was working for California Proposition 14, a ballot initiative which gave farm workers the right to unionize. In California, laws can be created or repealed directly by the voters and bypassing the elected legislature. The initiative process allows the voters, (given they collect sufficient signatures), to approve laws via statewide voting ... direct democracy. Prop 14 was one of those direct democracy actions which passed. The promoter of farm worker's rights was a gentleman named Cesar Chavez, who is a bit of a folk hero in certain circles.

Wow... Seems a bit weird, even for us... :-) You have central government, local ones, plus lobbies, plus direct democracy... If all steered in the same direction it would be great ! :-)

LOL ... in California we also have the Referendum process to compliment the Initiative. The Referendum is where the legislature places a law out to the general populus for approval, as opposed to approving/disapproving the measure via voting internally by the representatives.
