Freezing cold today, and the 300 PF Nikkor doesn't much like -15C. Sharpness suffers apparently (temperature affecting optical calibration?). I don't like it either sharpness or not. Only hope of relief would be some heavy snow falls -- alas none are imminent. The colours are enchanting in their cold sterility, though.
-
Adorable color, Birna. Brrr what a cold !
-
The major river through our valley still runs open, free of ice, and that adds to the humidity levels, which in turn makes the cold feel even worse. However in my part of the country temperatures but rarely go into the -20 to -30C range. Inland the climate is drier and they can have much more extreme cold spells in those regions.
The heavy blue of the shadows is for real. This is what you get when the sky is blue, solar elevation is very low, and little snow can reflect into the dark areas.
-
Street of Monchau, smartphone shot.
-
The bitterly cold weather leaves its tell-tale marks everywhere. At the same time, the cold clear air and the very low sun elevation make the distinction between direct and indirect illumination most obvious. I must admit to have a longing for some heavy snow fall.

I love the contrast in colour between the direct and indirect light. However, I am the one who shovels snow here so please keep your wishes to yourself :P

Hi Armando, thanks for commenting. During the winter, I keep the heat very low, and so we both wear sweaters. Yesterday we had our first snow and in this picture we had just come in from the outside. He's getting older so I must admit I spoil him more than I used to, he deserves it! Tom

Today I took a motorbike tour from my hometown, La Línea, all the way to Cádiz. Perfect evening for riding with around 19 degrees Celsius and sunny clear skies. I stopped at "El mirador del estrecho" (+36.05375,-5.55033) From here, there are a short 15 km to the coast of north Africa. On a clear day, you can see a few cities in the other continent. Still felt pretty close today. I love this view

Which camera/developer you use for the SE 2020?
Glad you like it, John. I basically adjust the basic parameters like contrast, exposure, highlight, shadow or saturation and crop the images in the default camera app. I had edited a couple of files in Adobe CC when I started to use my 2nd gen. SE, but I found the default camera app does the job well enough.

Thank you for the explanation, Akira.
I installed Lightroom (part of my CC package) that takes the photo's in DNG. It also offers loads of development options on the phone, but large screens work better for development. The default camera app does a reasonable good job.

Thank you, John, for sharing your experience with the LR app. I subscribe Adobe CC, so I can use LR app. The catalog system of LR is the main reason for me to stick to Photoshop. Does the LR app create the catalog like the computer versions? If the LR app only works as a photo editor without creating the catalog, I would want to shoot DNG and process in LR on my iPhone SE. The only thing that annoys me about the smartphone images is the sharpening effect which makes the images harsh. If I could shoot RAW (DNG, hopefully not sharpened), that would be nice.
-
The LR - DNG file is free from the sharpening effect done by the standard iPhone camera-app, it's the basic original file that LightRoom transfers to a DNG file. It's not as fast as the camera app, but that is a matter of experience. The White Balance is not always perfect, but that may be a matter of finetuning.
You can opt to edit on the phone, but the sync. process with the PC is swift and fast, and it's easy to work with the RAW file in ACR and Photoshop.

Looks like any wall on any little town in México
National park Uruapan, México
In Uruapan, we visited the park, the "Cupatitizio" river starts there, and there are many waterfalls, and many more springs, as we enter we asked for the closing time, 6PM, but when we were exiting the park we found the doors already locked!! It was 5:50 PM, I called the hotel, they told me to run to the main entrance, handed my camera to my daughter, and ran, I got there at 6:02PM only to find the exit locked. There is supposed to be a guard at the main entrance but no one would come. I ended up climbing a fence into a restaurant, explaining to the barman I needed help to get my wife and daughter out of the park, 2 waiters helped. The restaurant personnel were cool, understood the situation and we all laughed about this. As we walked into the hotel the lady I spoke to was leaving to go find me, she was surprised we were able to exit through the restaurant.

I have not even tried it is way too close to sunrise
Yes it did get to become synchronous with sunrise here to, but Stellarium indicated a chance at transition to dark - I envisioned it close to the horizon with some background landscape. However it might have been covered up in ice fog or simply too weak with the very slight glow of the day left, or I was not looking at the right place - there were not many distinct stars to navigate relative to at the time. Now it will be 80,000 years until next chance...

Than you Akira, the one on the left is an original Levin W 32 i bought new almost 50 years ago, it shows some scars but still plays well with a warm and sweet tone. However would like to take it to a competent luthier for replacing the adjustable sadles for a fixed and compensated one, adjusting the neck and so on, about time after all these years.
There is one for sale on Reverb (https://reverb.com/item/3259115-levin-w32-1975 (https://reverb.com/item/3259115-levin-w32-1975)) mentioning some more details on the type of instrument.

Thank you, Fons, for details. A short-scale dreadnought would be more comfortable to play as opposed to the longer, regular scale ones. Modifying an unusual saddle to a normal one is a pretty common repair (like he conversion of the adjustable saddle of some Gibson acoustics), so any qualified repair person should take care of it. Hope you continue to enjoy your pretty guitars.

Last week has been on the colder side, ambient temperatures between -10 and -20C. This morning I woke up early to a heavy snow fall and more pleasant climate, "only" -7C.
Not much exterior light despite the snow cover, so had to push ISO on the Z fc with the Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 wide open.
-
After a heavy load of snow during Christmas days, it then rained supercooled rain the whole yesterday. 14000 homes were not as lucky as myself and the close neighborhood that kept power, many still not restored. Roads are skating fields if passable at all.

Grand opening of the day.

What better start of the day than having your breakfast cereals, reading the newspaper, enjoying freshly brewed coffee from a pink 'Snork Maiden' mug, and documenting everything for NG through the eye of a Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 on your Z fc?

Thank you Paco.
Busy scenes would be a great topic! ;)

Thanks for commenting, Paco.
Another one from the ice storm. Luckily the ice eventually rained away - a good thing as we are now into the next more windy storm.
-
Birna, such a warm and cute set up presented in "a la Birna" way.

Thanks Paco.

You're lucky you have such a lovely subject for your portraits. As always, engaging and well executed.

Thank you both. I'm lucky :)

Every gloomy evening has the promise of a silver lining (somewhere)

Although I personally don't celebrate christmas, there are seasonal options to explore, such as a Christmas Rose Helleborus sp.

Now another year is at its end.
It has been a joy to see all the inspiring images during 2021.
Here in Hvidovre the next last day has been foggy.
Here is an image with the AiS 105mm f2.5 on the Df, from the local lake.

Very nice picture!
I assume, it is not stacked, but with a quite small aperture - how small?

Gipsy people have a saying here: "Health and freedom", as the ultimate wish for a happy living. So that will be my wish for all you.
Cheers.
