Title: Waiter, there is a giraffe eating my breakfast
Post by: Mikes on August 29, 2018, 16:50:18: Well, not quite. She is eating her breakfast in the restaurant - cereal pellets with molasses.

Taken last week at Giraffe Manor sanctuary, just outside Nairobi.

It was quite an experience - they were gentle creatures, but no doubt they could do a bit of damage if they decided to headbutt you. The giraffes were hand fed by guests twice a day - they arrived at 5.30 each morning looking for handouts. The pellets were quite small, and the giraffes stored them in their cheeks until it was worthwhile chewing and swallowing. When they swallowed, it sounded like a long drainpipe being flushed.

Hopefully she was satisfied, Akira. Their appetites were insatiable - they loved their grain and molasses pellets!

Couldn't quite manage that, David, but here is a shot of a lion watching me closely with my burger and fries!

She has very polite table manners: just a discrete nibbling on the pellets and no slurping everything off the plate with her very long tongue.

Thanks, Ann. Yes, the females were gentle and very well mannered. The lone male there is known to be grumpy, though. He was not invited to breakfast in the dining room!

Thank you. Photographing the giraffes was fun. Lions - beautiful, regal animals....
