Title: Hurghada, Egypt 2018
Post by: Jakov Minić on February 26, 2018, 19:22:21
Last year I visited Marsa Alam with my kids.
This year, we are in Hurghada.
Not that there is a lot of difference.
My love for this country is growing each time I visit, especially due to the Red Sea.
I am more of a summer/beach type than of a winter/snow type person.
So for me to enjoy a beach holiday with my kids in the middle of winter is a true treat.

1. the traditional pile-up;
2. 85/1.4 AF-D still works;
3. the traditional underwater selfie;
4. the traditional underwater fashion show;
5. first time feature in an underwater fashion show, my son;
6. traditional snorkeling on the beach;
7. traditional snorkeling on the beach, mark II.

I have come to realise that I am using the AW-1 much more than my D750 + (10.5/2.8, 20/1.8, and 85/1.4).
My prayers for an AW-2 and a fish-eye are going on for years now :)

Wow, fun pics!!

I tend to use the AW1 quite a lot on holidays too.

Just a few more years and your kids will take you on a holiday, instead of the other way around  8) 8) 8)

Looks like a lot of fun!

There is an Olympus fisheye convertor which fits on to the filter thread for the AW1 (not sure which lens).

Family fun :D

The Olympus fisheye adapter fits the 10/2.8 AW-Nikkor.

The fisheye adapter is the FCON-T01 and works very well with the 10mm f/2.8 AW-nikkor:

Thank you for your nice words!

Armando, thank you so much for your comments!
Anthony, many thanks to you too, and thanks for the Olympus tip.
Bjørn and Øivind, yes, thank you! I remember very well the thread that Øivind opened about the AW-1 and the Olympus adapter.
However, I would prefer to buy an AW1 fish-eye, than to buy the 10/2.8 + the adapter.
Erik, thanks, I am having the time of my life with the kids.
John, I thought you liked cold weather :D Thanks!

Speaking of the AW1 drawbacks, today I suffered a lot with motion blur.
Only later, examining the EXIFs I realised that the shutter speed, with flash on, cannot go beyond 1/60s.
I tried everything, and played with the ever so annoying menus, but I couldn't manage to get the shutter speed to exceed 1/60 when the internal flash was switched on. No wonder my images were blurry. Yes, I know I like them blurry, but today was not the day for blurriness :)

Not to mention that if you set the AW1 to underwater it makes only JPGs.

Tomorrow I will go fully manual and I will pump the shutter speed to 1/125 at least.
With wavy waters 1/60 simply doesn't do the trick. And the internal flash probably isn't powerful enough to freeze anything anyway.
The only thing it's good for is to drain your battery quicker :)

We visited a desert island today to the east of Hurghada and its Paradise/Mahmya beach.
The coral reefs in the near vicinity of the island were amazing and full of colorful fish.

Two takes of the same scene.
1. the globe
2. the tube
Couldn't pick between the two :)

Lovely pictures, unusual presentation.

I can see your dilemma Jakov, I think I prefer the Globe, because the horizon part is larger, it's easier to look at. The tube may better suit more intimate, closer surroundings with overhead detail perhaps?

You were all  obviously having a tremendous time and a lot of fun and your photographs show it!

I love your photos of your kids, who radiate happiness; also your fisheye shots - you obviously have a keen sense of what will work in that extreme format.

Robert, I completely agree with you. The globe looks better, thanks!

Thanks, Akira! Fun times produce fun images. :)

Thank you, Ann, for your nice words! Tremendous times, indeed.

Thanks you, David! Essentially I learned and got into photography thanks to my kids. It is only appropriate, I guess, that their images turn out the best.

Today I snorkeled again (and tried some globes/tubes, will post those later), but this time without the pop-up flash.
There was more than enough light - f/8; 1/200; ISO 160
Oh, what a difference...

Very nice underwater images! Is the rear lcd any use underwater ? or are you shooting blind ?

Tthe second mini planet gives a pretty good idea that the hotel is fantastic , makes me want to be there

Thank you, Armando :)

You barely see anything on the LCD screen, and even then you see a small area in front of you. So, I prefer to shoot blind and keep an eye out on ongoing traffic. I did set the AW1 in continuous shooting at 10fps to increase my chances of a good capture.
Something I couldn't do before when using the pop-up flash, which obviously is not needed. At least where I was shooting :)

The hotel was really fantastic. Great food, an aqua park, 7 swimming pools, many of which were heated.
It's just that I prefer the sea...

Wonderful fishy portraits — and all done with the simplest of equipment.

I have come across Boot-faced people from time to time . . . but a Bootfaced-fish is something entirely new to me!

Dear Ann,

Thank you so much for your nice words. Even the simplest of equipment nowadays is so good.
I had to look up the meaning of boot-faced :)

Best, Jakov
