Title: In the Woods
Post by: CNolan on December 05, 2016, 15:22:03
Hi,

Recently joined up to NikonGear after returning to Nikon after a few years away with Fuji & Sony. Am enjoying my D500 very much. Here's a recent shot of my daughter in the nearby woods.

Nikon d500 & 50mm 1.8G

A moody portrait. However, is the very low contrast and lack of darker tones intentional?

Thanks Bjorn. Yea, I tend to be going through a bit of a low contrast phase at the moment. Not to everyone's taste and it doesn't suit a lot of photos but I quite like it with images like this as it gives a bit of a dreamy feel I find.

Nothing wrong with imparting a special mood by means of contrast  However, it is unusually seen these days and actually eerily reminds of underexposed colour negatives printed to "save" the picture. Hence my curiosity.

It has an eerie feeling to it, as though she is standing in the midst of something quite foreboding. JMO

Clive, just for the record, you can be a member here regardless of what you shoot.
We are brand agnostic in spite of the name Nikongear.  ;D

I got to wondering what would happen if only the child was given contrast?

That's interesting Bjorn. Don't think i came across that technique back in my film days.

Thanks for the comment. I think most of my non-work photography leans towards the eerie and dark.

Thanks Andrea. I may post up some earlier non-Nikon work in the future then! :)

Yes, adding contrast just to the child might give her some more 'pop' in the shot. I'll give it a go.

Looks like early film material from the 1970ies to 1980ies, Kodak Ektachrome blueish tint ... great expression of the child's face ... tells a story

I love it.

The "mood" fits in with her "sad" look

A bit spooky, and I would have framed it with more of the child, but it definitely has mood.
