I was asked to donate a photo for a charity - which would go on auction with some very nice names in photography in Cape Town. Well tonight it was auction time.
I am very pleased with the amount my canvass fetched - and it was purchased by the owner of Orms - who is a serious collector of good photography. His wife is also a photographer - and I bet he is given a LOT of images - in fact he can print them himself probably as he is the owner of the biggest camera store in Cape Town - and owns a HUGE commercial print room too.
Anyhoo - my image got a higher price that some other photographers who are really well known - 2 of which are having an exhibition in New York in 2 weeks time, and another one who has publish a string of books and everybody knows him. Some of the photos with very high reserve prices didnt sell at all, so one needs to take into account that although I did well - some with serious "names" were just out of reach of the buyers' budgets perhaps.
But it was also clear in many instances - people paid higher prices for someone with a name. (hence me feeling especially pleased)
Photo credit - Richard Adcock but he had a good camera (mine haha)

Hearty congratulations, Elsa. You probably will have a free coffee service account in his shop ?

Or, that your image commanded greater interest than some of those from the "serious" names. Your name may be more "seriously" taken than you think. ;)

I think everyone lives in the hopes that someone recognises your name and work, so yes it would be great if this can happen more often :) But it's a catch 22 situation. We would prefer our work to sell because it is like - not because we are well known.
