Title: A follow-up to Scotland 2016
Post by: David Paterson on October 30, 2016, 20:02:46
Simato (Simone Tomasi), who had to leave the Scotland 2016 event a few days early, came up to stay with us for a couple of days, in order to complete his much-needed education on all the natural wonders reachable from a base in Killin.

Day One was misty, cool and damp, but we visited Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle, Glen Etive, Strath Fillan, Yellow Island, Loch Tay  and two aspen groves in full autumn colour.
Day Two was a iittle better; we-re-visited Loch Awe and the castle, and Glen Etive, and I introduced Simone to Loch Tulla, and Glen Orchy, another gem.

When Simone posts a few images we can decide whether he should be declared a fully-certified graduate of Scotland 2016. Meanwhile here's a couple of my weekend images.
1. Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle in the rain.
2. Iris (?) leaves with rain-drops.
3. Beside Loch Tulla.
4. Autumn in Glen Etive.

Thank you for sharing these images, Dave!
Nice memories and proof of your successful work of instilling the Scottish Highlands Virus in many of us!

I'll subscribe to this thread! :)

8 hours of driving and 400 miles later, I have made it home.
It has become clear pretty soon that I am way too knackered to process the vast amount of pictures I have, so here goes a semi-random selection of photos.
Only resizing from in-camera JPEG's.

My thanks to David and Mayumi for the fabulous hospitality, I enjoyed every minute of this trip.

Thank you all for the comments so far.
Watch this space because there is definitely more to come.
Here is another one. Water reflections have featured more strongly than usual for me.

A nice reminder of this fabulous first main NG get-together ! Autumn in Scotland seems to worth the trip...

I enjoy specially all pictures of Kilnchurn castle : autumn colours and mist fits perfectly the  darkness and melancolic atmosphere of these ruins.

I am going to follow this thread ! :)

Thanks Dave and Simone !

Here are a few more from the weekend -

1. Saturday - even the canoeists are heading home
2. Dusk on the Loch Tay flood-plain
3. Beech-tree beside Loch Tay
4. Cabin in Glen Orchy
5. Autumn on Yellow Island

Hospitality went both ways - Simone did all the driving (and paid for the fuel), and on Sat. night cooked the best risotto Mayumi and I have ever eaten.

Thanks David, I am glad you enjoyed the risotto.

I recognise many images but I totally missed the cabin, must have been looking another way.
Really like that one.

Lovely pictures!
Autumn colours, mist, and the Scottish landscape!

I especially like Simone's portrait format reflection picture (nice optical trick) and David's picture of the hut (those contrasts!).

David: Is that beech tree at the head of Loch Tay?

2. Glen Etive
3. & 4. Loch Tulla
5. The River Orchy
6. The magic hill, Loch Awe

Simone, I love the water reflections photo. It is a kind of Scottish Monet.  And the reflected island is intriguing.
Lovely series from both you and David.

David, the castle in the rain photo is so full of mood and atmosphere. The Beech Tree at Loch Tay has a compelling composition. It's reaching out to me saying 'come back to Scotland' !!  ;D

Beautiful series of Autumn colors.
I've never been to Scotland in that periode, perhaps I should.
These images wants me to go back (again). :)

Thank you Andrea, I was thinking exactly about the Impressionists when I took that photo.

Some great images there, Simone. I must try to manage some kind of response, though in my case this will mean scraping the bottom of the barrel, rather.

Thanks Mike - I did suggest we did the meeting in October, but spring worked better for most people.
If there is another meeting in autumn I am more than willing to go. And for me Skye would be top of the list.

1) Buchaille Etive Mor and Copal river
2) Near Bridge of Orchy - David what is exactly the name of this place?

First - if you don't mind being corrected - it's the River Coupal. And the valley with the railway viaduct is Strath Fillan. (If Akira is still looking in, the Scottish/English word "'strath" - a broad valley - comes directly from the Gaelic "srath", and St Fillan was the person who brought Christianity to the region around 1300 years ago.)

I don't mind at all being corrected.
I always found funny and a  bit weird that the river's nane is the same as the brand of shutters. In fact, it is not.

Strath Fillan - thanks I'll add that to my keywords.

Glen Orchy - to which I took Simone last week - was one of the places I had hoped to introduce to our members during Scotland 2016.  We were too busy with other things and never had the time, so I'm using it as an excuse to post some Glen Orchy images, shot just two days after Simone went home. This long valley is a gem, with conifer forests, grasslands, broad-leaved woodlands and a sparkling river with several waterfalls. I was concentrating on the trees.

Six Glen Orchy images and one of Strath Fillan.

Somehow my memories of Glen Orchy are a bit on the gloomier side... we did not have good luck with the weather, definitely need to come back next year.
I like especially the second and fourth one.
