Title: Mark Wallace
Post by: elsa hoffmann on October 08, 2016, 18:53:59
Mark Wallace (the dude from Adorama & Creative Live) spend 2 weeks + in Cape Town and I spend 5 days with him, making videos for Adorama - so ya - I am a video maker now  ;D ;D ;D  so dont stress - I wont give up my day job just yet -

these two videos was made at my place - one in studio - and one outside on my deck. I did the video by hand (yes I know it's shaky - hence not giving up my day job...)

For those interested - it's the  two most recent videos here - http://www.adorama.com/alc/series/exploring-photography-with-mark-wallace

3 more videos to follow which I shot a lot of the footage - all for Adorama - and that was done at a Game Reserve. I havent seen the edited versions yet... I was interviewed also  - but if I look like a dork - I am NOT sharing the link (and the probability exists!)

At the game reserve - he was mock charged by a Lioness - and the brother nearly had to change pants.

Thank you Armando for the introduction!

Great job Elsa !

The video camera is actually a Panasonic Lumix - which he claims does an excellent job - and Adorama is very happy with the results of this cheap little thing.

Keep in mind he is on a Bike- and has very little space to carry his whole world with him - including Leica rangefinder, 50mm 135mm, Profoto studio light, video light, tripod, light stand, Go pro, bike gear, clothes and whatever else he needs to sh*t, shave and shampoo. It really isnt half as romantic as it sounds being on the road for 3 years already (although he only started using Bike in Feb this year - before it was trains and planes)

Love the pics Elsa. However, in the third one, isn't it a bit crazy to get that close to a rhino? Aren't they generally bad tempered and fast?

This one is used to people - having nearly died when poachers cut her horn off - she had to be handled a lot - for a long time. Having said that - she is HUGE and can walk right over you. The ranger was just outside the shot though, and could steer her away - which he did when she got too inquisitive. Guests are not usually allowed this close - but this was a special occasion of course) They are not generally bad tempered. Now a Buffalo.... thats an entirely different thing...

Elsa, you are welcome
I was wondering if you were going to mention Mark over here, I'm glad it worked, I had no idea if any of you had plans when I sent messages to you

The model seems to be a lot of fun to shoot with her

I'm not interested in faking the golden hour (in fact, the foliage in the background looks like shot under the daylight!) or avoiding harsh shadows in the studio.

What I want to watch is YOUR INTERVIEW!  PLEASE!   ;D ;D ;D

Armando - I just turned out so well.  I managed to introduce him to connections he was desperate to make - so you can see how we all network  ;)
The model won't be on my list of invites..... She however does know how to work.

Akira - if you have to make a short teaching video every week of your life and you start running out of ideas  - I you start faking much more than sunset  ;D ;D ;D

I dont think my interview will be used  - it was only about 1 minute anyway    :P

Okay, you look nice but with no voice?!  Thumbs down!

Actually, I remember watching a TV commercial filmed with the faking golden hour technique.  In that case, they just used a grad orange filter, and the video looked awful!  :D

Bjørn - yes - every 6 weeks :)

Jakov & Akira  - wait for the next video...

Let me just tell you - this is his show - so I just stand there and look stupid.
The next videos were truly awful for me - I looked so awkward just standing there

Nice to see this Elsa !

And there is a solution for "not looking stupid": make your own video's and you have plenty of topics: Elsa in the studio, Elsa on wildlife tour,......

It actually is exactly what would change the whole thing around. Just standing there is seriously stupid. One feels uncomfortable and awkward - I mean its like being a wallflower - or a horse on show.

You didn't consider to refuse to be wallflowered?

haha Actually I did. One video I made him delete - and another I changed his whole thing - he complained as he said he spoke about me in the videos - so he has to introduce me. Which I get - and Also - if I want exposure - I need to suck it up I suppose. Just please tell your friends I am not really a DORK!

you make a truly beautiful wall flower  ;D
leave the horse on a show to someone else

now , he does not pause for a millisecond, so it appears hard to even say "hello"

Well spotted. He talks rather fast as well - I wish these guys would slow down - but ya  time, bandwidth is something to consider - on the road, as well as per Adorama requirements.

Well, my second thought tells me that this is the perfect way to make us want to watch ALL the videos from SA:

The first and second parts without Elsa, the third part with Elsa but no voice and the last part with Elsa finally to have something to say.  :D

I loved watching this, Elsa. And, as always, your photos are top notch. Great video work too. Your view from your house is fantastic.
I've heard from multiple videographers that the Panasonics are excellent for video work.

Elsa, these videos are not shaky at all! You should see mine.

Love the view from Signal Hill. That spot must be very close to where I took some of my night shots from in April? Next to the road, just down-hill of the Armco?

Funny you say that about Rhino and Buffalo, my experience is the opposite. I have found Buffalo to be fairly placid for the most part. Several times I have been litterally inside herds of several hundred animals, without ever feeling very threatened, whereas Rhino have charged me for no apparent reason from fairly long distances at times. Of course, if a buffalo is wounded it's a very different story!

I also have a question though: In almost every photo, he cuts the top of the model's head off. As a bird photographer, this would be seen as a cardinal sin, but it seems that some photographers do this as a rule? Am I the only person bothered by this?

The video was shot on Signal Hill, just before taking the bend to go around to the parking lot. So kind of the last vantage point shooting the mountain.

It is accepted practice - and part of many photographer's styles - to cut off the top of the head of any subject. I seldom do it anymore - dont quite know why - but with close up's especially that is fine. Half body portraits - there is doesnt work for me at all.

Just found this:
Quote
10 most dangerous animals in Africa: The Cape Buffalo is a safe bet for number ten. They are credited with killing about 200 people a year – and are said to be the biggest killers of ‘big game hunters’ in the world. An adult male can be more than 700kg (1,540lbs) and even a lion hesitates to attack one on his own. Also, buffalo are usually to be found in large intimidating herds, that will mob any threat to their young.

re shaky video - I dont even want to think what the last 3 will be like - at some point the elephant literally pushed me out of the way and I couldnt zoom out enough while it was right in front of me - it was quite funny - so I hope the footage will be too. But who knows....

Yes, that is pretty much where this photo was taken from.

Pity there were no pretty yellow flowers around at the time though.

Guess I should have gone back at daybreak?

While I have seen videos of buffalo herds tackling (and even killing) lion, I have never seen or heard of this happening with people.

It is certainly a dangerous animal to hunt, but to my knowledge it really only becomes dangerous if either wounded or surprised at very close distance. When wounded, it may become vindictive and there are many recorded instances of buffalo ambushing it's hunters. I have even seen this (or at least the footprints) myself, although the buffalo died before the hunter sprung the trap. I am fairly sure that the reason it kills the most hunters is because it is by far the most commonly hunted of the so-called dangerous game.

Be warned though that any wild animal can be dangerous. There are also many records of much smaller animals (for example Bushpig, Bushbuck and Warthog) killing people. But I am sure you know this already.

Your comment about going back is exactly the kind of thing I have in mind - when working a scene.
